Mr Thomas lived alone in a quiet town. He was a retired spy, so he kept watch over the neighbourhood. He was always looking for anything suspicious.
Il signor Tommaso viveva da solo in una tranquilla città. Era un ex spia, quindi teneva d’occhio il quartiere. Era sempre alla ricerca di qualcosa di sospetto.
One day, new neighbours moved in next door. Mr Thomas watched them carefully. At first, they seemed like a normal couple. But soon, he saw them doing something strange.
Un giorno, si erano trasferiti dei nuovi vicini nella casa accanto. Il signor Tommaso li aveva osservati attentamente. Inizialmente, sembravano una coppia normale. Ma presto, li aveva visti fare qualcosa di strano.
Every evening, they went into their garden. They were gardening. Even stranger, they were whispering at the same time.
Ogni sera, andavano nel loro giardino. Facevano giardinaggio. Ancora più strano, sussurravano allo stesso tempo.
“That’s suspicious,” Mr Thomas thought, watching them from his window. “What are they whispering about? They’re hiding something.”
“È sospetto”, ha pensato il signor Tommaso, guardandoli dalla finestra. “Cosa stanno sussurrando? Nascondono qualcosa.”
Mr Thomas decided to investigate. That night, he went into their garden. But he knocked over a spade, and it made a loud noise.
Il signor Tommaso ha deciso di indagare. Quella notte, è entrato nel loro giardino. Ma ha rovesciato una pala e ha fatto un rumore forte.
His neighbour opened his bedroom window. “Who’s there?” he said.
Il suo vicino ha aperto la finestra della sua camera da letto. “Chi è lì?” ha detto.
“Err… just a cat!” Mr Thomas said, in a moment of confusion.
“Ehm… solo un gatto!” ha detto il signor Tommaso in un momento di confusione.
The next night, he tried to listen through his fence, but he only heard discussions about roses and daisies.
La notte successiva, ha provato ad ascoltare attraverso il suo recinto, ma ha sentito solo discussioni su rose e margherite.
“Code words, surely,” he thought. “I need more information.”
“Parole in codice, sicuramente”, ha pensato. “Ho bisogno di più informazioni.”
So, the next night, he sent his robotic vacuum cleaner under the fence. He had attached a small camera on top.
Quindi, la notte successiva, ha mandato il suo robot aspirapolvere sotto la recinzione. Ci aveva attaccato sopra una piccola telecamera.
The next morning, he turned on his computer to watch the video. But, the camera had fallen off on the other side of the fence. The video showed eight hours of the same rose.
La mattina successiva, ha acceso il suo computer per guardare il video. La telecamera, però, era caduta dall’altra parte della recinzione. Il video mostrava la stessa rosa per otto ore.
Mr Thomas was losing hope. But then it was all revealed.
Il signor Tommaso stava perdendo le speranze. Ma poi si è scoperto tutto.
That afternoon, he saw lots of vans arrive. Lots of people came out and ran into the neighbours’ house. Then, the neighbours came out with them again, and waited in their garden.
Quel pomeriggio, ha visto arrivare molti furgoni. Molte persone sono scese e sono corse nella casa dei vicini. Poi, i vicini sono usciti di nuovo con loro e hanno aspettato nel loro giardino.
“Finally, the truth!” Mr Thomas exclaimed, watching closely.
“Finalmente, la verità!” ha esclamato il signor Tommaso, guardando attentamente.
The people took a large sign out of the van, and put it in front of the house. It said: “Welcome to the Gardening Show”. They brought out big cameras, and turned them on.
Le persone hanno tirato fuori un grande cartello dal furgone e lo hanno posato di fronte alla casa. Diceva: “Benvenuti allo show del giardinaggio”. Hanno tirato fuori delle grandi telecamere e le hanno accese.
Everyone clapped, and the couple smiled at the cameras.
Tutti hanno applaudito e la coppia ha sorriso alle telecamere.
“They’ve been getting ready to appear on television!” Mr Thomas said to himself, laughing.
“Si stavano preparando per apparire in televisione!” ha detto a se stesso il signor Tommaso, ridendo.
When the show came on television, Mr Thomas watched it.
Quando il programma è andato in onda in televisione, il signor Tommaso lo ha guardato.
“We like to do gardening in the evening,” said his neighbour, “when it isn’t so hot. But if we need to talk, we always whisper, so that we don’t wake up our neighbour, Mr Thomas. He is very strange!”
“Ci piace fare giardinaggio la sera”, ha detto il suo vicino, “quando non fa così caldo. Ma se dobbiamo parlare, sussurriamo sempre, per non svegliare il nostro vicino, il signor Tommaso. È molto strano!”
