Grace and Tom had recently bought a house together. Both in their early twenties, they didn’t have a lot of money. The house was small, and quite cold. But they were happy snuggling together with a big blanket on their lumpy sofa.
Grazia e Tommaso avevano comprato una casa insieme di recente. Entrambi, poco più che ventenni, non avevano molti soldi. La casa era piccola e piuttosto fredda. Ma erano felici di coccolarsi insieme sotto una grande coperta sul loro divano scomodo.
“Oh my god!” squealed Grace one evening, jumping to her feet with her phone in her hand.

“What is it, sweetheart?” said Tom, rising to her side, concerned.

Raj Raichand, the social media influencer billionaire, had announced a surprise gift. The first hundred people who had commented on his latest photo had won an eighty-day round-the-world tour on his luxury yacht, all expenses paid for two people. By pure chance, Grace had been the eighty-ninth person to comment – out of seventy-thousand.
Raj Raichand, l’influencer mediatico miliardario, aveva annunciato un regalo a sorpresa. Le prime cento persone che avevano commentato la sua ultima foto avevano vinto un tour del mondo di ottanta giorni sul suo yacht di lusso, tutto pagato, per due persone. Per puro caso, Grazia era stata l’ottantanovesima persona a commentare, su settantamila.
They jumped into each others’ arms and kissed. They’d never been so lucky in their lives. Grace hadn’t even been following Raichand’s account. The photo had been suggested to her by the algorithm. It showed Mr Raichand beaming ecstatically, holding a cocktail and a beautiful woman in each arm. Grace had commented: ‘Living the dream!’
Si sono gettati l’uno nelle braccia dell’altra e si sono baciati. Non erano mai stati così fortunati nella loro vita. Grazia non seguiva nemmeno l’account di Raichand. La foto le era stata suggerita dall’algoritmo. Mostrava il signor Raichand raggiante di gioia, con un cocktail e una bellissima donna ad ogni braccio. Grazia aveva commentato: ‘Vita da sogno!’
Just a week later, Grace and Tom were greeted on the gigantic yacht with glasses of the finest champagne. They met the other winners, the staff, and the film crew who would document their trip, but the billionaire himself was nowhere to be seen.
Dopo solo una settimana, Grazia e Tommaso sono stati accolti sul gigantesco yacht con bicchieri del miglior champagne. Hanno conosciuto gli altri vincitori, lo staff e la troupe cinematografica che avrebbe documentato il loro viaggio, ma il miliardario non c’era da nessuna parte.
That evening they were served a ten-course seafood banquet, with caviar, oysters, scallops, lobsters and crabs. Grace fell about laughing when Tom, unfamiliar with such fine food, tried to eat an oyster’s shell.
Quella sera è stato servito un banchetto di frutti di mare di dieci portate, con caviale, ostriche, capesante, aragoste e granchi. Grazia è scoppiata a ridere quando Tommaso, non avendo dimestichezza con cibi così prelibati, ha cercato di mangiare il guscio di un’ostrica.
They toured the enchanting islands of the Mediterranean and the vibrant coasts of Africa and India. They drank fresh coconut juice and experienced luscious exotic flavours while passing by Malaysia and Indonesia. Crossing the Panama Canal, they arrived in the Caribbean and sunbathed in a palm tree paradise.
Hanno visitato le incantevoli isole del Mediterraneo e le vivaci coste dell’Africa e dell’India. Hanno bevuto succo di cocco fresco e assaporato sapori esotici e deliziosi mentre passavano dalla Malesia e dall’Indonesia. Attraversando il Canale di Panama, sono arrivati ai Caraibi e hanno preso il sole in un paradiso di palme.
On the last night of the cruise, they finally caught sight of Mr Raichand himself. He was standing on his own, staring out to sea. They approached him.
L’ultima notte della crociera hanno scorto finalmente il signor Raichand in persona. Era da solo, fissava il mare. Gli si sono avvicinati.
“We can’t thank you enough,” said Grace.
“Non possiamo ringraziarla abbastanza”, ha detto Grazia.
“This has been such a generous gift,” said Tom.
“È stato un dono davvero generoso”, ha detto Tommaso.
Mr Raichand didn’t respond. He didn’t turn his head, nor even move at all.
Il signor Raichand non ha risposto. Non ha girato la testa, né si è mosso affatto.
“Let’s leave him alone,” Grace whispered. They both returned to the farewell party.
“Lasciamolo in pace”, ha sussurrato Grazia. Entrambi sono tornati alla festa d’addio.
After eighty incredible days, Grace and Tom found themselves once again in their little living room, in their small and cold house, on their lumpy sofa. The memory of the sandy beaches and shimmering ocean was still vivid, but it was fading. They spent the evening watching all the videos that the film crew had made.
Dopo ottanta giorni incredibili, Grazia e Tommaso si sono ritrovati ancora una volta nel loro piccolo soggiorno, nella loro casa piccola e fredda, sul loro divano scomodo. Il ricordo delle spiagge sabbiose e dell’oceano scintillante era ancora vivo, ma stava sbiadendo. Hanno passato la serata a guardare tutti i video che la troupe aveva girato.
Over the next few days, a strange mood descended over them. Their jobs had never been exciting, but now they were a monotonous torture. The walls of their house seemed even closer than before they’d left. They cooked their favourite meal to cheer themselves up, but it seemed to have no taste at all.
Nei giorni seguenti, un umore strano è calato su di loro. Il loro lavoro non era mai stato entusiasmante, ma ora era una tortura monotona. Le pareti della loro casa sembravano ancora più strette di prima che fossero partiti. Hanno cucinato il loro piatto preferito per tirarsi su di morale, ma sembrava non avere sapore.
They sat at opposite ends of their sofa, scrolling fervently through social media. Their big blanket lay in a heap on the floor.
Seduti agli estremi opposti del loro divano, scorrevano freneticamente i social media. La loro grande coperta giaceva in un mucchio sul pavimento.
“We shouldn’t just follow Raichand,” said Tom, without looking up. “Other influencers might do prizes as well. They’re bound to, since he did it.”
“Non dovremmo seguire solo Raichand”, ha detto Tommaso, senza guardare su. “Anche gli altri influencers potrebbero dare premi. È inevitabile, dato che lui l’ha fatto.”
