O chefe colocou os pratos no balcão. O bife estava perfeito. Os legumes estavam frescos e macios. O cheiro do molho era de dar água na boca. Henrique pegou os pratos e os levou com elegância até a sala de jantar.
The chef placed the plates on the counter. The steak was perfect. The vegetables were fresh and tender. The smell of the sauce was mouth-watering. Henry picked the plates up and carried them gracefully into the dining room.
Havia apenas uma mesa no salão luxuosamente decorado. No canto, uma mulher tocava uma música suave no piano. As paredes eram de vidro, e a vista para o mar era magnífica.
There was only one table in the lavishly decorated room. In the corner, a woman was playing soft piano music. The walls were made of glass, and the view of the sea was magnificent.
Henrique colocou um prato na frente de cada um dos três homens e começou a servir o vinho.
Henry placed one plate in front of each of the three men, and began to pour the wine.
“Então, ela foi eleita”, disse um homem de cabelos castanhos. “Mas sem o meu apoio, ela não é nada.”
“So, she’s been elected,” said one man with brown hair. “But without my support, she’s nothing.”
Um homem careca falou: “São dezessete governos que você controla agora, não é? Seu diabo esperto!”
A bald man spoke. “That’s seventeen governments you control now, isn’t it? You sneaky devil!”
“Com licença!” respondeu o homem, ofendido. “São dezoito.”
“I beg your pardon!” the man replied, offended. “It’s eighteen.”
“Você está se aproximando de mim.”
“You’re catching up with me.”
Os homens brindaram com suas taças.
The men clinked their glasses.
Henrique se curvou, saiu da sala e voltou para a cozinha. Lavou as mãos e foi ao banheiro. Dentro de um cubículo, verificou sua câmera escondida. O dispositivo ainda estava funcionando corretamente.
Henry bowed, left the room and returned to the kitchen. He washed his hands, and went to the bathroom. Inside a cubicle, he checked his hidden camera. The device was still working correctly.
Henrique era um repórter infiltrado. Por mais de cinco anos, ele tinha fingido ser garçom. Tinha trabalhado em dez empresas de bufê diferentes. Tudo isso para poder servir o jantar aos três homens naquela noite.
Henry was an undercover reporter. For over five years, he had pretended to be a waiter. He’d worked at ten different catering companies. It was all so he could serve dinner to the three men this evening.
Todos os funcionários da empresa tinham um contrato rigoroso. Se revelassem qualquer coisa que ouvissem, a penalidade seria extremamente severa. Mas Henrique não se importava: era mais importante mostrar a verdade ao mundo.
Everyone who worked for the company had a strict contract. If they revealed anything they heard, the penalty was extremely harsh. But Henry didn’t care: it was more important to show the world the truth.
Ele lavou as mãos novamente, voltou para a cozinha e ajudou a preparar a sobremesa. Era uma torta luxuosa, feita com chocolate amargo raro e decorada com ouro.
He washed his hands again, returned to the kitchen, and helped to prepare the dessert. It was a luxurious tart, made with rare dark chocolate and decorated with gold.
Quando Henrique levou a sobremesa para a sala de jantar, os três homens estavam rindo.
When Henry brought the dessert into the dining room, the three men were laughing.
“Não me importa se a Presidente acredita nas mudanças climáticas”, disse um homem de cabelo encaracolado. “Tenho casas subterrâneas secretas em todos os continentes. Ela pode queimar junto com todo o resto.”
“I don’t care whether the President believes in climate change,” said a man with curly hair. “I have secret underground homes on every continent. She can burn with everyone else.”
“Subterrâneas?” riu o homem de cabelo castanho. “Aproveite sua vida de toupeira. Eu vou acenar pra você lá do espaço.”
“Underground?” laughed the man with brown hair. “Enjoy your life as a mole. I’ll wave to you from orbit.”
O terceiro homem zombou. “Espaço? Eu vou ficar bem aqui na Terra. Se estiver quente, tenho ar-condicionado. Se estiver frio, tenho aquecimento. Se precisar de alguma coisa, tenho um exército de robôs.”
The third man scoffed. “Space? I’m staying right here on Earth. If it’s hot, I’ve got air conditioning. If it’s cold, I’ve got heating. If there’s something I need, I’ve got an army of robots.”
Henrique olhou para as tortas de chocolate. Sentiu enjoo. Colocou uma na frente de cada homem e serviu mais vinho.
Henry looked at the chocolate tarts. He felt sick. He placed one in front of each man, and poured more wine.
“Sabe, às vezes eu sinto pena deles”, disse o homem careca. “Bilhões de pessoas, trabalhando tanto, por tão pouco. Como o nosso garçom.”
“You know, I feel bad for them sometimes,” said the bald man. “Billions of people, working so hard, for so little. Like our waiter.”
Henrique ficou paralisado.
Henry froze.
“Olhe para este homem. Você percebe que ele trabalhou cinco anos só para estar aqui esta noite?”
“Look at this man. Do you realise he’s worked for five years just to be here tonight?”
