“There’s something unusual about this painting,” said the tour guide. “Can you see what it is?”
“Há algo incomum nesta pintura”, disse o guia. “Vocês conseguem ver o que é?”
The tourists looked closely. Behind them, other tourists walked around the busy museum.
Os turistas olharam com atenção. Atrás deles, outros turistas circulavam pelo museu movimentado.
“It’s the paint. It’s thick,” a woman said, loudly. She was wearing sunglasses and a large hat.
“É a tinta. É grossa”, disse uma mulher em voz alta. Ela usava óculos escuros e um chapéu grande.
“It’s an oil painting,” said the tour guide. “That’s normal.”
“É uma pintura a óleo”, disse o guia. “Isso é normal.”
“It’s not realistic. The colours are dull.”
“Não é realista. As cores são apagadas.”
“It’s over three hundred years old. And you’re wearing sunglasses, madam.”
“Tem mais de trezentos anos. E a senhora está usando óculos escuros, madame.”
“Well, what then?” said someone else.
“Bem, então o que é?”, disse outra pessoa.
“The woman in the painting… no one knows who she is. But we can discover a lot about her, by looking closely. In fact, we can discover her deepest secret.”
“A mulher na pintura… ninguém sabe quem ela é. Mas podemos descobrir muito sobre ela, observando bem. Na verdade, podemos descobrir o segredo mais profundo dela.”
“She was very intelligent,” said the loud woman’s son. The boy let go of his mother’s hand and stepped forward.
“Ela era muito inteligente”, disse o filho da mulher barulhenta. O menino soltou a mão da mãe e deu um passo à frente.
“Be quiet, Lewis,” said the mother. “You’re embarrassing me.”
“Fique quieto, Luís”, disse a mãe. “Você está me envergonhando.”
“How do you know?” asked the tour guide.
“Como você sabe?”, perguntou o guia.
“She has so many shelves full of books. There is a desk in the room, with paper and ink. She likes to study.”
“Ela tem tantas prateleiras cheias de livros. Há uma escrivaninha na sala, com papel e tinta. Ela gosta de estudar.”
“Very good!” said the tour guide. “The artist wanted us to notice those things. He’s telling us who she was.”
“Muito bem!”, disse o guia. “O artista queria que notássemos essas coisas. Ele está nos dizendo quem ela era.”
The other tourists nodded and looked impressed. The mother wasn’t looking.
Os outros turistas assentiram, parecendo impressionados. A mãe não olhava.
“She loves to travel,” Lewis continued.
“Ela ama viajar”, continuou Luís.
“Lewis!” said the mother. She turned to the tour guide. “I’m sorry about my son. I can’t teach him to be quiet.”
“Luís!”, disse a mãe. Ela se virou para o guia. “Desculpe pelo meu filho. Eu não consigo ensiná-lo a ficar quieto.”
“I can see why that’s difficult for you,” said someone.
“Posso entender porque isso é difícil para a senhora”, disse alguém.
“Yes, he’s a very difficult child.”
“Sim, ele é uma criança muito difícil.”
“Why do you think she liked to travel?” the tour guide asked Lewis.
“Por que você acha que ela gostava de viajar?”, perguntou o guia a Luís.
“The style of the room is European. But look around. The rug is Indian. That ornament is from Peru, I think. And the mirror looks —”
“O estilo da sala é europeu. Mas olhe ao redor. O tapete é indiano. Aquele ornamento é do Peru, eu acho. E o espelho parece —”
“Do as you’re told, Lewis!” said the mother, closing her handbag. “We’re leaving.”
“Faça o que eu mandei, Luís!”, disse a mãe, fechando a bolsa. “Estamos indo embora.”
After Lewis and his mother had left, a man asked, “But what was the secret?”
Depois que Luís e a mãe tinham saído, um homem perguntou: “Mas qual era o segredo?”
“Look in the corner.”
“Olhe no canto.”
“Are those… children’s toys?”
“Aquilo são… brinquedos de criança?”
“Yes! But why did the artist paint those? He’s telling us the woman had a child – their child. Their love was a secret, but he wanted us to know. Now, please follow me…”
“Sim! Mas por que o artista pintou isso? Ele está nos dizendo que a mulher tinha um filho — o filho deles. O amor deles era um segredo, mas ele queria que nós soubéssemos. Agora, por favor, me acompanhem…”
“You must learn to be quiet!” the mother said to Lewis as they left the museum.
“Você precisa aprender a ficar quieto!”, disse a mãe para Luís enquanto saíam do museu.
It was evening and the city was busy, loud and full of bright lights.
Era noite, e a cidade estava movimentada, barulhenta e cheia de luzes brilhantes.
“But they still didn’t notice the real secret!” said Lewis.
“Mas eles ainda não perceberam o verdadeiro segredo!”, disse Luís.
“I’m glad they didn’t. After your father died, I wanted to burn the painting. But I’m glad I sold it, so I can still see it, from time to time.”
“Ainda bem que não perceberam. Depois que seu pai morreu, eu quis queimar a pintura. Mas fico feliz por tê-la vendido, assim posso vê-la de vez em quando.”
“But Father hated living in secret! He wanted people to understand you! That’s why he painted you realistically – without a reflection in the mirror!”
“Mas o papai odiava viver em segredo! Ele queria que as pessoas entendessem você! É por isso que ele te pintou de forma realista — sem um reflexo no espelho!”
