Grâce et Thomas venaient d’acheter une maison ensemble. Ils étaient tous deux au début de la vingtaine, ils n’avaient pas beaucoup d’argent. La maison était petite et assez froide. Mais ils étaient heureux de se blottir l’un contre l’autre sous une grande couverture sur leur canapé déformé.
Grace and Tom had recently bought a house together. Both in their early twenties, they didn’t have a lot of money. The house was small, and quite cold. But they were happy snuggling together with a big blanket on their lumpy sofa.
« Oh mon Dieu ! » a crié Grâce un soir en se levant d’un bond avec son téléphone à la main.
“Oh my god!” squealed Grace one evening, jumping to her feet with her phone in her hand.
« Qu’est-ce qu’il se passe, chérie ? » a dit Thomas en se levant à ses côtés, inquiet.
“What is it, sweetheart?” said Tom, rising to her side, concerned.
Raj Raichand, l’influenceur milliardaire sur les réseaux sociaux, venait d’annoncer une surprise. Les cent premières personnes qui avaient commenté sa dernière photo avaient gagné un tour du monde de quatre-vingts jours sur son yacht de luxe, tous frais payés pour deux personnes. Par pur hasard, Grâce avait été la quatre-vingt-neuvième à commenter… sur soixante-dix mille personnes.
Raj Raichand, the social media influencer billionaire, had announced a surprise gift. The first hundred people who had commented on his latest photo had won an eighty-day round-the-world tour on his luxury yacht, all expenses paid for two people. By pure chance, Grace had been the eighty-ninth person to comment – out of seventy-thousand.
Ils se sont jetés dans les bras l’un de l’autre et se sont embrassés. Ils n’avaient jamais été aussi chanceux de leur vie. Grâce ne suivait même pas le compte de Raichand. La photo lui avait été suggérée par l’algorithme. Elle montrait M. Raichand rayonnant de bonheur, un cocktail à la main et une belle femme dans chaque bras. Grâce avait commenté : “La vie de rêve !”
They jumped into each others’ arms and kissed. They’d never been so lucky in their lives. Grace hadn’t even been following Raichand’s account. The photo had been suggested to her by the algorithm. It showed Mr Raichand beaming ecstatically, holding a cocktail and a beautiful woman in each arm. Grace had commented: ‘Living the dream!’
À peine une semaine plus tard, Grâce et Thomas ont été accueillis sur l’immense yacht et se voyaient offrir des verres du meilleur champagne. Ils ont rencontré les autres gagnants, le personnel et l’équipe de tournage qui allait documenter leur voyage, mais le milliardaire lui-même était introuvable.
Just a week later, Grace and Tom were greeted on the gigantic yacht with glasses of the finest champagne. They met the other winners, the staff, and the film crew who would document their trip, but the billionaire himself was nowhere to be seen.
Ce soir-là, ils ont dégusté un banquet de fruits de mer en dix services, avec du caviar, des huîtres, des coquilles Saint-Jacques, des homards et des crabes. Grâce a éclaté de rire lorsque Thomas, peu familiarisé avec une telle nourriture raffinée, a essayé de manger la coquille d’une huître.
That evening they were served a ten-course seafood banquet, with caviar, oysters, scallops, lobsters and crabs. Grace fell about laughing when Tom, unfamiliar with such fine food, tried to eat an oyster’s shell.
Ils ont visité les îles envoûtantes de la Méditerranée et les côtes vibrantes d’Afrique et d’Inde. Ils ont bu du jus de noix de coco frais et ont goûté de délicieuses saveurs exotiques en passant par la Malaisie et l’Indonésie. Après avoir traversé le canal de Panama, ils sont arrivés dans les Caraïbes et se sont prélassés dans un paradis de palmiers.
They toured the enchanting islands of the Mediterranean and the vibrant coasts of Africa and India. They drank fresh coconut juice and experienced luscious exotic flavours while passing by Malaysia and Indonesia. Crossing the Panama Canal, they arrived in the Caribbean and sunbathed in a palm tree paradise.
La dernière nuit de la croisière, ils ont enfin aperçu M. Raichand en personne. Il était debout, seul, et regardait la mer. Ils se sont approchés de lui.
On the last night of the cruise, they finally caught sight of Mr Raichand himself. He was standing on his own, staring out to sea. They approached him.
« Nous ne pourrons jamais assez vous remercier », a dit Grâce.
“We can’t thank you enough,” said Grace.
« Ce voyage a été un cadeau tellement généreux », a dit Thomas.
“This has been such a generous gift,” said Tom.
M. Raichand n’a pas répondu. Il n’a ni tourné la tête ni même bougé d’un centimètre.
Mr Raichand didn’t respond. He didn’t turn his head, nor even move at all.
« Laissons-le tranquille », a chuchoté Grâce. Ils sont tous les deux retournés à la fête d’adieu.
“Let’s leave him alone,” Grace whispered. They both returned to the farewell party.
Après quatre-vingts jours incroyables, Grâce et Thomas se sont retrouvés une fois de plus dans le petit salon de leur petite et froide maison, sur leur canapé déformé. Le souvenir des plages de sable et de l’océan scintillant était encore vif, mais il s’effaçait peu à peu. Ils ont passé la soirée à regarder toutes les vidéos que l’équipe de tournage avait tournées.
After eighty incredible days, Grace and Tom found themselves once again in their little living room, in their small and cold house, on their lumpy sofa. The memory of the sandy beaches and shimmering ocean was still vivid, but it was fading. They spent the evening watching all the videos that the film crew had made.
Au cours des jours suivants, une humeur étrange s’est emparée d’eux. Leurs emplois n’avaient jamais été excitants, mais maintenant, ils étaient un supplice monotone. Les murs de leur maison semblaient encore plus oppressants qu’avant leur départ. Ils ont cuisiné leur plat préféré pour se remonter le moral, mais il semblait n’avoir aucun goût.
Over the next few days, a strange mood descended over them. Their jobs had never been exciting, but now they were a monotonous torture. The walls of their house seemed even closer than before they’d left. They cooked their favourite meal to cheer themselves up, but it seemed to have no taste at all.
Ils étaient assis aux deux extrémités de leur canapé et scrollaient fébrilement sur les réseaux sociaux. Leur grande couverture traînait en boule sur le sol.
They sat at opposite ends of their sofa, scrolling fervently through social media. Their big blanket lay in a heap on the floor.
« Nous ne devrions pas seulement suivre Raichand », a dit Thomas, sans lever les yeux. « D’autres influenceurs pourraient aussi offrir des cadeaux. Ils le feront certainement, puisqu’il l’a fait. »
“We shouldn’t just follow Raichand,” said Tom, without looking up. “Other influencers might do prizes as well. They’re bound to, since he did it.”
« Bonne idée », a dit Grâce. « Assure-toi aussi d’activer les notifications. Nous devons être les premiers à commenter chaque publication. »
“Good idea,” said Grace. “Make sure you click to receive notifications too. We’ve got to be the first to comment on every post.”
