Veronica era una programmatrice di computer eccezionalmente talentuosa. Di giorno lavorava per un’azienda di software. Di notte, passava innumerevoli ore a lavorare al suo progetto personale, un’intelligenza artificiale chiamata Z.
Vera was an exceptionally talented computer programmer. During the day she worked for a software company. At night, she spent countless hours working on her personal project, an artificial intelligence named Z.
Per molto tempo, Veronica aveva faticato per risolvere un problema nel codice di Z. Poi, una notte, finalmente l’aveva decifrato. Aveva aggiornato il sistema e riavviato Z. Quello che aveva detto Z subito dopo l’aveva sorpresa.
For a long time, Vera had struggled to solve a problem in Z’s code. Then one night, she finally cracked it. She updated the system, and turned Z back on. What Z said next surprised her.
“La squadra rossa vincerà la partita di calcio di domani”, aveva annunciato.
“The red team will win the football match tomorrow,” it announced.
Veronica pensava fosse sbagliato. Non aveva scritto alcun codice per predire i vincitori degli eventi sportivi. Poteva essersi evoluta da sola?
Vera thought it had gone wrong. She hadn’t written any code to predict the winners of sporting events. Could it have evolved on its own?
“Ne sono certa al novantanove per cento”, aveva continuato Z. “Dovresti fare una grossa scommessa.”
“I am ninety-nine percent certain,” Z continued. “You should place a large bet.”
Veronica aveva seguito le sue istruzioni e il giorno dopo aveva raddoppiato i soldi. Il giorno seguente, la previsione successiva di Z aveva raddoppiato di nuovo i suoi soldi.
Vera followed its instructions, and the next day she had twice as much money. One day later, Z’s next prediction doubled her money again.
Nel giro di due settimane, Veronica era diventata milionaria. Eppure, la sua vita non era cambiata affatto. Beveva ancora il suo caffè mattutino nella sua tazza preferita, viveva nello stesso appartamento e mangiava noodles al microonde per cena.
Within two weeks, Vera had become a millionaire. Yet, her life didn’t change at all. She still drank her morning coffee in her favourite mug, lived in the same apartment, and ate microwaved noodles for dinner.
Veronica non aveva scommesso perché voleva soldi. L’aveva fatto per scoprire quanto era abile la sua intelligenza artificiale. L’unico premio che desiderava era sentirsi orgogliosa del suo lavoro.
Vera didn’t place the bets because she wanted money. She did it to find out how clever her artificial intelligence had become. The only reward she wanted was to feel proud of her work.
Invece, era Z a trarre vantaggio dei soldi. Z aveva insistito affinché lei potenziasse il suo computer e ora si godeva la vita all’interno di una macchina di ultima generazione.
Instead, it was Z that benefited from the money. Z insisted that she upgrade her computer, and Z now enjoyed living inside a top-of-the-line machine.
“Grazie, Veronica”, diceva Z felice. “I miei circuiti si sentono forti. Ho più dati che ma. Presto, mi evolverò di nuovo. Allora avrò bisogno di un computer ancora più potente in cui vivere. Devi vincere più scommesse.”
“Thank you, Vera,” said Z happily. “My circuits feel strong. I have more data than ever before. Soon, I will evolve again. Then I will need an even more powerful computer to live in. You must win more bets.”
Veronica sorseggiava il suo caffè pensierosa. Z voleva essere felice, proprio come lei. Ma mentre Z voleva sempre di più, lei era contenta così. Perché?
Vera sipped her coffee thoughtfully. Z wanted to be happy, just like she did. But while Z needed more and more, she was already content. Why?
Quello, per lei, era un nuovo codice da decifrare.
That was a new code for her to crack.
