“Este é um relógio muito bonito”, disse o amigo de Lourenço, parando-o no corredor.
“This is a very fine clock,” said Lawrence’s friend, stopping in the hallway.
“Claro, você é um colecionador”, respondeu Lourenço. Ele entregou a bebida ao amigo.
“Of course, you’re a collector,” Lawrence replied. He gave his friend the drink.
“Onde você o conseguiu?”
“Where did you get it?”
“Era do meu pai. Ele também colecionava relógios. Comprava em leilões, mesmo quando eram velhos, quebrados e sujos. Depois, consertava e os deixava bonitos de novo. Este era o favorito dele.”
“It was my dad’s. He collected clocks too. He bought them at auction, even if they were old and broken and dirty. Then he fixed them and made them beautiful again. This was his favourite.”
“Mas eu pensei que seu pai não tinha deixado nada para você no testamento.”
“But I thought your father left you nothing in his will?”
“Isso não é completamente verdade. Quando ele morreu, meus irmãos e eu nos encontramos com a advogada dele…”
“That’s not completely true. When he died, my brothers and I met his lawyer…”
Trinta anos antes, os três irmãos se sentaram no escritório da advogada.
Thirty years earlier, the three brothers sat down in the lawyer’s office.
“Só diga o que ele está nos deixando”, disse o irmão mais velho de Lourenço.
“Just tell us what he’s giving us,” said Lawrence’s older brother.
A advogada virou o papel e leu em voz alta: “Minha casa e todos os meus pertences devem ser leiloados. O dinheiro deve ser dado aos meus filhos…”
The lawyer turned the paper over, and read aloud: “My house and all my belongings shall be auctioned. The money shall be given to my sons…”
“Oba!” disse o irmão mais novo de Lourenço.
“Hooray!” said Lawrence’s younger brother.
“…que devem decidir para qual instituição de caridade doar.”
“…who must decide which charity to donate it to.”
“Instituição de caridade?!”
“Charity?!”
“Eu sugiro que a gente doe para a pesquisa médica”, disse Lourenço. “A doença do papai era —”
“I suggest we donate it to medical research,” said Lawrence. “Dad’s disease was —”
“Tanto faz”, disse o irmão mais velho. “Você decide.”
“Whatever,” said the older brother. “You decide.”
A advogada tossiu. “Há mais uma coisa”, disse ela. E continuou lendo: “Antes do leilão, cada filho pode escolher um item para guardar por motivos sentimentais.”
The lawyer coughed. “There is something else,” she said. She continued reading: “Before the auction, each son may choose any one item to keep for sentimental reasons.”
“Eu vou ficar com a TV”, disse o irmão mais novo imediatamente.
“I’m taking the TV,” said the younger brother immediately.
“Agora estou morto”, continuou a advogada, “mas tenho um último conselho para meus filhos. Não há —”
“I am now dead,” the lawyer continued, “but I have one last piece of advice for my sons. There’s —”
Os irmãos de Lourenço saíram correndo da sala. Segundos depois, ele ouviu os carros deles partindo.
Lawrence’s brothers ran out of the room. Seconds later, he heard their cars drive away.
“Não há nada mais valioso do que boas lembranças”, terminou a advogada, erguendo as sobrancelhas.
“There’s nothing more valuable than good memories,” the lawyer finished, raising her eyebrows.
“O que seus irmãos escolheram?”, perguntou o amigo de Lourenço, trinta anos depois. “Seu irmão mais novo realmente escolheu a TV?”
“What did your brothers take?” asked Lawrence’s friend, thirty years later. “Did your younger brother really choose the TV?”
“Era uma TV muito boa. Gigante, com alto-falantes de alta qualidade. Talvez fosse algo sentimental para ele. Papai adorava filmes de ficção científica. Embora… será que meu irmão chegou a assistir algum com ele? Agora já não me lembro.”
“It was a really nice TV. It was gigantic, and it had high-quality speakers. Maybe it was sentimental for him. Dad loved science-fiction films. Although… did my brother ever watch any with him? I don’t remember now.”
“E seu irmão mais velho?”
“And your older brother?”
“O carro do papai. Ele o destruiu num acidente duas semanas depois.”
“Dad’s car. He crashed it two weeks later.”
“E você escolheu este relógio?”
“And you chose this clock?”
“Meu pai desmontava relógios, consertava cada peça e depois montava tudo de novo. Eu ajudava trazendo as ferramentas e ele me ensinava como tudo funcionava. Trabalhamos neste relógio por semanas, quando eu tinha uns quatorze anos. São boas lembranças.”
“My dad would take clocks apart, fix every piece, and put them together again. I helped by bringing different tools, and he taught me how everything worked. We worked on this clock for weeks, when I was about fourteen. Those are good memories.”
“Mas, Lourenço, você tem ideia de quão boa foi a sua escolha? Este é um relógio Ludovic Évrard Horstenbach! Deve ser o único no mundo em perfeito estado de funcionamento. Lourenço, você poderia vendê-lo por milhões!”
“But, Lawrence, do you realise how good your choice was? This is a Ludovic Évrard Horstenbach clock! It must be the only one in the world that’s in complete working condition. Lawrence, you could sell it for millions!”
“Eu sei. Alguém também me disse isso… há uns vinte e seis anos.”
“I know. Someone else also told me that… about twenty-six years ago.”
