Não havia outros carros na estrada naquela noite. Adriano estava dirigindo para casa por uma grande floresta, sentindo-se triste e solitário. Entre as árvores estava completamente escuro.
There were no other cars on the road that night. Adrian was driving home through a large forest, feeling sad and lonely. Between the trees it was completely dark.
Ele ligou o rádio, mas não havia sinal. Então ele começou a cantar uma velha canção da sua juventude. Ele cantou a última linha aos berros: “Meu coração estará – sempre – com você!”
He turned on the radio, but there wasn’t any signal. So he started to sing an old song from his youth. He sang the final line at the top of his voice: “My heart will – always – be – with you!”
Quando terminou, o silêncio parecia o som mais alto de todos.
When he finished, the silence seemed the loudest sound of all.
Adriano parou o carro de repente. Um carro tinha se chocado contra uma árvore ao lado da estrada. Adriano saiu.
Adrian stopped the car suddenly. A car had crashed into a tree on the side of the road. Adrian got out.
“Você está bem?” ele gritou.
“Are you alright?” he shouted.
Ele olhou dentro do carro. Estava vazio. A porta do motorista estava aberta.
He looked inside the car. It was empty. The driver’s door was open.
Adriano ligou para os serviços de emergência.
Adrian called the emergency services.
“Olá, qual é a emergência?”
“Hello, what is the emergency?”
“Alguém bateu na beira da estrada. Eles deixaram o carro e eu não sei onde estão.” Ele deu sua localização.
“Someone has crashed on the side of the road. They’ve left their car and I don’t know where they are.” He gave his location.
“Obrigado, senhor. Conhecemos essa estrada. Muitos acidentes acontecem lá. Estaremos aí em breve. Você estava dirigindo sozinho, senhor?”
“Thank you sir. We know that road. A lot of crashes happen there. We’ll be there soon. Were you driving alone, sir?”
“Sim, eu… eu estava apenas indo para casa.”
“Yes, I – I was just driving home.”
“E onde é sua casa, senhor? Preciso da informação para fazer um relatório completo.”
“And where is your home, sir? I need the information to file a complete report.”
Depois que Adriano deu seu endereço, houve uma longa pausa.
After Adrian gave his address, there was a long pause.
“Esse endereço não corresponde a nenhum dos meus registros, senhor.”
“That address doesn’t match any of my records, sir.”
“O quê? — Ah, talvez você tenha meu endereço antigo.” Ele o deu.
“What? — Oh, maybe you have my old address.” He gave it.
“É uma cidade agradável, senhor. É de lá que você estava vindo esta noite?”
“That’s a nice town, sir. Is that where you were driving from this evening?”
“Sim; eu estava visitando meus pais. Esse é o endereço dos meus pais. Isso é importante?”
“Yes – I was visiting my parents. That’s my parents’ address. Is this important?”
“Você disse que estava indo para casa, senhor. Mas isso não é verdade, é?”
“You said you were driving home, sir. But that’s not true, is it?”
“O que você quer dizer?”
“What do you mean?”
“Você estava indo para o lugar onde você mora, na cidade. Mas a cidade não é sua casa, é? Você não cresceu lá. Você não aprendeu a andar de bicicleta lá, nem brincou nos campos com seus pais, nem cantou com seus amigos. A verdade é que você estava indo embora de casa.”
“You were driving to the place where you live, in the city. But the city isn’t your home, is it? You didn’t grow up there. You didn’t learn to ride your bike there, or play in the fields with your parents, or sing with your friends. The truth is, you were driving away from your home.”
“O que é isto?” gritou Adriano, sentindo-se assustado. “Quem é você? Este é o serviço de emergência?”
“What is this?” shouted Adrian, feeling frightened. “Who are you? Is this the emergency services?”
A outra pessoa encerrou a chamada.
The other person ended the call.
Adriano estava apavorado. O que estava acontecendo? Ele olhou ao redor. Alguém estava observando ele? Mas ele ainda estava sozinho no escuro.
Adrian was terrified. What was going on? He looked all around. Was someone watching him? But he was still alone in the dark.
Então, Adriano ouviu um som que o fez congelar.
Then, Adrian heard a sound that made him freeze.
“— coração estará sempre — coração estará sempre —”
“— heart will always be — heart will always be —”
Era o rádio quebrado no carro acidentado. Adriano se virou rapidamente. Ele olhou para o carro novamente. Ele conseguiu ver o motorista agora, no espelho do carro. O homem estava morto em seu assento.
It was the broken radio in the crashed car. Adrian turned quickly. He looked at the car again. He could see the driver now, in the car’s mirror. The man was dead in his seat.
Adriano olhou para o homem por um longo tempo. Então ele olhou ao longo da estrada, em direção à cidade. Finalmente, ele se virou e começou a caminhar para casa.
Adrian looked at the man for a long time. Then he stared along the road, towards the city. Finally, he turned around, and began to walk home.
