“This is a very fine clock,” said Lawrence’s friend, stopping in the hallway.
“Questo è un orologio davvero bello”, ha detto l’amico di Lorenzo, fermandosi nel corridoio.
“Of course, you’re a collector,” Lawrence replied. He gave his friend the drink.
“Ah, già, sei un collezionista”, ha risposto Lorenzo. Ha porso la bevanda al suo amico.
“Where did you get it?”
“Dove l’hai preso?”
“It was my dad’s. He collected clocks too. He bought them at auction, even if they were old and broken and dirty. Then he fixed them and made them beautiful again. This was his favourite.”
“Era di mio padre. Anche lui collezionava orologi. Li comprava alle aste, anche se erano vecchi, rotti e sporchi. Poi li riparava e li rendeva di nuovo splendidi. Questo era il suo preferito.”
“But I thought your father left you nothing in his will?”
“Ma pensavo che tuo padre non ti avesse lasciato nulla nel testamento?”
“That’s not completely true. When he died, my brothers and I met his lawyer…”
“Non è del tutto vero. Quando è morto, io e i miei fratelli ci siamo incontrati con la sua avvocata…”
Thirty years earlier, the three brothers sat down in the lawyer’s office.
Trent’anni prima, i tre fratelli si erano seduti nell’ufficio dell’avvocata.
“Just tell us what he’s giving us,” said Lawrence’s older brother.
“Dicci solo cosa ci lascia”, ha detto il fratello maggiore di Lorenzo.
The lawyer turned the paper over, and read aloud: “My house and all my belongings shall be auctioned. The money shall be given to my sons…”
L’avvocata ha girato il foglio e ha letto ad alta voce: “La mia casa e tutti i miei beni saranno messi all’asta. Il denaro sarà dato ai miei figli…”
“Hooray!” said Lawrence’s younger brother.
“Evviva!” ha detto subito il fratello minore di Lorenzo.
“…who must decide which charity to donate it to.”
“…che dovranno decidere a quale associazione benefica donarlo.”
“Charity?!”
“Beneficenza?!”
“I suggest we donate it to medical research,” said Lawrence. “Dad’s disease was —”
“Propongo di donarlo alla ricerca medica”, ha detto Lorenzo. “La malattia di papà era —”
“Whatever,” said the older brother. “You decide.”
“Come vuoi”, ha detto il fratello maggiore. “Decidi tu.”
The lawyer coughed. “There is something else,” she said. She continued reading: “Before the auction, each son may choose any one item to keep for sentimental reasons.”
L’avvocata ha tossito. “C’è un’altra cosa”, ha detto. Ha continuato a leggere: “Prima dell’asta, ogni figlio può scegliere un oggetto da tenere per ragioni sentimentali.”
“I’m taking the TV,” said the younger brother immediately.
“Io prendo la TV”, ha detto immediatamente il fratello minore.
“I am now dead,” the lawyer continued, “but I have one last piece of advice for my sons. There’s —”
“Ormai sono morto”, ha continuato l’avvocata, “ma ho un ultimo consiglio per i miei figli. Non c’è —”
Lawrence’s brothers ran out of the room. Seconds later, he heard their cars drive away.
I fratelli di Lorenzo sono usciti correndo dalla stanza. Pochi secondi dopo, lui ha sentito le loro macchine partire.
“There’s nothing more valuable than good memories,” the lawyer finished, raising her eyebrows.
“Non c’è niente di più prezioso dei bei ricordi”, ha concluso l’avvocata, sollevando le sopracciglia.
“What did your brothers take?” asked Lawrence’s friend, thirty years later. “Did your younger brother really choose the TV?”
“Cosa hanno scelto i tuoi fratelli?” ha chiesto l’amico di Lorenzo, trent’anni dopo. “Il tuo fratello minore ha davvero preso la TV?”
“It was a really nice TV. It was gigantic, and it had high-quality speakers. Maybe it was sentimental for him. Dad loved science-fiction films. Although… did my brother ever watch any with him? I don’t remember now.”
“Era una TV davvero bella. Era gigantesca e aveva altoparlanti di alta qualità. Forse per lui aveva valore sentimentale. Papà amava i film di fantascienza. Anche se… mio fratello li ha mai guardati insieme a lui? Ora non me lo ricordo.”
“And your older brother?”
“E tuo fratello maggiore?”
“Dad’s car. He crashed it two weeks later.”
“L’auto di papà. L’ha schiantata due settimane dopo.”
“And you chose this clock?”
“E tu hai scelto questo orologio?”
“My dad would take clocks apart, fix every piece, and put them together again. I helped by bringing different tools, and he taught me how everything worked. We worked on this clock for weeks, when I was about fourteen. Those are good memories.”
“Mio padre smontava gli orologi, riparava ogni pezzo e poi li rimetteva insieme. Io lo aiutavo portandogli vari attrezzi, e lui mi insegnava come funzionava tutto. Abbiamo lavorato su questo orologio per settimane, quando avevo circa quattordici anni. Quelli sono bei ricordi.”
“But, Lawrence, do you realise how good your choice was? This is a Ludovic Évrard Horstenbach clock! It must be the only one in the world that’s in complete working condition. Lawrence, you could sell it for millions!”
“Ma, Lorenzo, ti rendi conto di quanto sia stata giusta la tua scelta? Questo è un orologio di Ludovic Évrard Horstenbach! Di sicuro è l’unico al mondo in perfette condizioni di funzionamento. Lorenzo, potresti venderlo per milioni!”
“I know. Someone else also told me that… about twenty-six years ago.”
“Lo so. Qualcun altro me lo ha già detto… circa ventisei anni fa.”
