Es ist dunkel. Es ist keinen Mond am Himmel. Zwei Personen laufen schnell auf die Schule zu. Es ist ein altes Gebäude aus Stein. Es sieht fast aus wie eine Burg.
It is dark. There is no moon in the sky. Two people walk quickly towards the school. It is an old building made of stone. It looks almost like a castle.
Sie bleiben am Haupteingang stehen.
They stop at the main entrance.
„Die dritte Tür —“, sagt der Mann. Er hat Angst. Er kann kaum sprechen.
“Third door —” the man says. He is scared. He can’t speak.
„Hier sind Sie sicher“, sagt die Frau.
“You’re safe here,” says the woman.
Der Mann atmet. „Gehen Sie durch die Haupthalle. Dann ist es die dritte Tür links.“
The man breathes. “Go through the main hall. Then it’s the third door on the left.”
Der Mann hält ihr eine Taschenlampe hin. „Nehmen Sie das.“ Sie schiebt sie weg.
The man offers her a torch. “Take this.” She pushes it away.
„Aber es ist gefährlich, Frau Stahl! Die letzte Person, die …“
“But it’s dangerous, Miss Steel! The previous person who…”
„Ich kann sie nicht benutzen. In meinem Beruf, Herr Direktor … muss ich im Dunkeln arbeiten. Meine … Werkzeuge … sind in meiner Tasche.“
“I can’t use it. In my profession, Headmaster… I must work in the dark. My… tools… are in my bag.”
Das Gesicht des Mannes ist weiß. „Ich will gar nicht wissen, was da drin ist“, sagt er. „Bitte lösen Sie einfach unser … Problem.“
The man’s face is white. “I don’t want to know what’s in there,” he says. “Please just solve our… problem.”
„Schicken Sie einfach die zweite Zahlung pünktlich“, sagt Frau Stahl. Dann geht sie in die Schule hinein. Die Tür schlägt hinter ihr zu.
“Just send the second payment on time,” says Miss Steel. Then she steps inside the school. The door slams behind her.
Es gibt überhaupt kein Licht. Sie kann nichts sehen. Sie berührt die Wände mit ihren Händen. Der Stein ist kalt.
There is no light at all. She can’t see anything. She touches the walls with her hands. The stone is cold.
Sie geht nach vorne. Ihre Schritte sind laut. Sie sind das einzige Geräusch. Sie hält ihre Tasche dicht an ihrer Brust.
She walks forward. Her footsteps are loud. They are the only sound. She holds her bag close to her chest.
Auf der anderen Seite der Haupthalle befindet sich ein langer, schmaler Flur. Es gibt viele Türen zu ihrer Linken und Rechten. Sie zählt die Türen. Eins, zwei, drei. Sie bleibt stehen. Sie hält den Atem an.
On the other side of the main hall, there is a long, narrow corridor. There are many doors on her left and right. She counts the doors. One, two, three. She stops. She holds her breath.
Unter der dritten Tür sieht sie etwas Licht. Das Licht ist sehr schwach, mit einer blassen violetten Farbe. Sie lauscht. Da ist ein klopfendes, kratzendes Geräusch.
Under the third door, she can see some light. The light is very dim, with a pale purple colour. She listens. There is a tapping, scraping sound.
Sie betritt das Klassenzimmer. Die Tür knarrt laut. Der Raum ist groß, mit vielen Tischen und Stühlen.
She enters the classroom. The door creaks loudly. The room is large, with many tables and chairs.
Ein kleiner Junge sitzt auf einem der Stühle. Das violette Licht kommt von ihm.
A little boy is sitting in one of the chairs. The purple light is coming from him.
Langsam geht Frau Stahl näher heran. Sie steht hinter den Jungen. Er schreibt mit einem Stück Kreide auf eine Tafel. Sie kann die weiße Schrift durch den Rücken des Jungen hindurch sehen.
Slowly, Miss Steel walks closer. She stands behind the boy. He is writing on a slate with a piece of chalk. She can see the white writing through the boy’s back.
Sie muss näher heran.
She needs to be closer.
„Kann ich mich zu dir setzen?“, fragt sie leise.
“Can I sit with you?” she asks quietly.
Der Junge antwortet nicht. Die Kreide klopft und kratzt. Langsam setzt sich Frau Stahl hin. Der Junge ist sehr kalt. Sie kann es fühlen.
The boy doesn’t respond. The chalk taps and scrapes. Slowly, Miss Steel sits down. The boy is very cold. She can feel it.
„Bist du noch eine Geisterjägerin?“, fragt der Junge plötzlich. „Ich kann dich auch verletzen.“
“Are you another ghost killer?” says the boy suddenly. “I can hurt you too.”
„Ich will dir nicht wehtun“, sagt Frau Stahl schnell. Zu schnell.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” says Miss Steel quickly. Too quickly.
Fünfhundert siebzehn tausend zweihundert sechsundvierzig“, sagt der Junge. Er schaut auf die Tafel. Überall stehen Zahlen darauf. „Geteilt durch Zweiundvierzig tausend achthundert zwölf …“
“Five hundred and seventeen thousand, two hundred and forty six,” says the boy. He is looking at the slate. There are numbers all over it. “Divided by forty-two thousand, eight hundred and twelve…”
„Du … machst Mathe?“
“You’re… doing maths?”
„Ich bin schlecht in Mathe!“, ruft der Junge. „Deshalb hat der Lehrer mich bestraft. Er hat mir diese Aufgabe gegeben. Er sagte: ‚Du darfst erst gehen, wenn du sie gelöst hast!‘ Fünfhundert siebzehn tausend …“
“I’m bad at maths!” the boy cries. “So the professor punished me. He gave me this question. He said: ‘You can’t leave until you solve it!’ Five hundred and seventeen thousand…”
„Und du versuchst es immer noch? Wie lange schon …?“
“And you’re still trying? How long…?”
„Ich weiß nicht … die Kerze brennt noch … oh … wo ist die Kerze?“
“I don’t know… the candle is still… oh… where’s the candle?”
Der Junge schaut sich nach der Kerze um. Er sieht Frau Stahl nicht an.
The boy looks around for the candle. He isn’t looking at Miss Steel.
Leise öffnet Frau Stahl ihre Tasche. Sie beobachtet den Jungen und sucht dabei in ihrer Tasche. Langsam nimmt sie einen kleinen, schwarzen Gegenstand heraus. Sie legt ihn auf den Tisch.
Silently, Miss Steel opens her bag. Watching the boy, she searches inside her bag. Slowly, she takes out a small, black object. She puts it on the table.
„Was ist das?“, fragt der Junge plötzlich.
“What’s that?” says the boy suddenly.
„Das nennt man einen Taschenrechner.“
“It’s called a calculator.”
