La machine bourdonnait bruyamment pendant qu’elle nettoyait le sol. Je portais un casque. J’écoutais la cassette de ma mère intitulée “Musique pour dormir”. Mais je n’entendais que la machine de nettoyage.
The machine buzzed loudly as it cleaned the floor. I was wearing headphones. I was listening to my mum’s tape called ‘Music for Sleep’. But I could only hear the cleaning machine.
J’ai ouvert les yeux et j’ai regardé l’horloge. Il était une heure dix-sept du matin, au milieu de la nuit, mais les lumières blanches et éclatantes du terminal de l’aéroport donnaient l’impression d’être l’après-midi.
I opened my eyes and looked at the clock. It was one seventeen AM – the middle of the night – but the bright white lights of the airport terminal made it feel like the afternoon.
Je me suis retournée, mal à l’aise. Mon sac à dos faisait office d’oreiller, mon manteau de matelas, le banc en métal de lit. Pas loin, je pouvais voir mes parents, et quelques autres voyageurs, en train de ronfler.
I turned around, feeling uncomfortable. My rucksack was my pillow, my coat was my mattress, the metal bench was my bed. Nearby I could see my parents, and a few other travellers, snoring.
Notre prochain vol était dans dix heures. « Économisons de l’argent ! » avait dit ma mère. Un vol direct était très cher. Il était bien moins cher de s’arrêter ici au milieu du trajet. Nous aurions pu passer la nuit à l’hôtel, mais c’était très cher aussi. « Elle n’a que sept ans, elle dormira n’importe où », avait dit mon père. Je l’ai regardé ronfler.
Our next flight was in ten hours. “Let’s save money!” my mum had said. A direct flight was very expensive. It was much cheaper to stop here in the middle of the journey. We could have stayed in a hotel for the night, but that was very expensive too. “She’s only seven, she’ll sleep anywhere,” my dad had said. I watched him snore.
J’ai enlevé mon casque et j’ai éteint le lecteur de cassettes. C’est alors que j’ai vu un garçon accroupi derrière un banc. Il utilisait ses doigts comme un pistolet. « Pan ! Pan ! » a-t-il chuchoté.
I took off my headphones and turned off the tape player. Then I saw a boy crouching behind a bench. He was using his fingers like a gun. “Bang! Bang!” he whispered.
J’ai fait semblant d’être touchée. Je suis tombée du banc en roulant et je me suis allongée par terre. Le garçon a couru vers moi et a posé ses doigts sur mon cou. Puis il a mis sa main contre son oreille. « L’ennemi est mort », a-t-il dit. « Compris, commandant ! »
I pretended to be shot. I rolled off the bench and laid down on the floor. The boy ran over and put his fingers on my neck. Then he put his hand against his ear. “The enemy is dead,” he said. “Understood, commander!”
« Pan ! » ai-je dit en me levant et en pointant le garçon du doigt.
“Bang!” I said, getting up and pointing at the boy.
Il a couru derrière le banc et s’est assis. J’ai entendu sa voix : « Commandant, j’ai été touché ! L’ennemi m’a piégé ! »
He ran behind the bench and sat down. I heard his voice: “Commander, I’ve been shot! The enemy tricked me!”
J’ai couru vers lui et j’ai pointé mon « pistolet » sur lui. « Ne bouge pas ! » ai-je chuchoté. « Qui es-tu ? »
I ran towards him and pointed my ‘gun’ at him. “Don’t move!” I whispered. “Who are you?”
« Agent spécial Quatorze », a dit le garçon en faisant semblant de tousser.
“Special Agent Fourteen,” said the boy, pretending to cough.
« Pourquoi tu ne me l’as pas dit ? Je suis l’Agent spécial Dix-sept. Nous ne sommes pas ennemis ! »
“Why didn’t you tell me? I’m Special Agent Seventeen. We aren’t enemies!”
« Prends ces bandages », a dit le garçon. Il a tendu la main. Elle était vide. « Si tu arrêtes le saignement, ça ira. »
“Take these bandages,” said the boy. He held out his hand. It was empty. “If you stop the bleeding, I’ll be ok.”
« Où est-ce que je t’ai touché ? »
“Where did I hit you?”
« Ici », a dit le garçon en montrant son cœur.
“Here,” said the boy, pointing to his heart.
« Ne bouge pas », ai-je dit.
“Hold still,” I said.
C’était le premier chapitre de l’histoire des Agents spéciaux Quatorze et Dix-sept. Au cours des heures suivantes, nous avons combattu des terroristes (les autres voyageurs), des robots (la machine de nettoyage) et des extraterrestres (le personnel de l’aéroport). Ensemble, nous avons sauvé le monde.
That was the first chapter in the story of Special Agents Fourteen and Seventeen. Over the next few hours, we fought terrorists (other travellers), robots (the cleaning machine) and aliens (the airport staff). Together, we saved the world.
Le lendemain matin, nous nous sommes réveillés avant tout le monde. Nous avons parcouru l’aéroport de long en large ensemble, en parlant et en regardant toutes les boutiques. Nous avons passé beaucoup de temps dans un magasin de jouets.
The next morning, we woke up before everyone else. We walked up and down the airport together, talking and looking in all the shops. We spent a long time in a toy shop.
« Quand je serai grand, j’aurai une grande maison, avec des jouets dans chaque pièce », a dit le garçon.
“When I grow up, I’ll have a big house, with toys in every room,” said the boy.
« Je viendrai te rendre visite. Mais seulement si tu as un train miniature. »
“I’ll visit you. But only if you have a toy train.”
« Bien sûr que j’aurai un train miniature. Et plein de petites voitures. »
“Of course I’ll have a toy train. And loads of toy cars.”
« Génial ! »
“Cool!”
« Te voilà ! » a dit ma mère en entrant dans le magasin.
“There you are!” said my mum as she came into the shop.
Elle m’a pris la main. La mère du garçon était arrivée elle aussi. Elle a pris la main du garçon.
She took my hand. The boy’s mum had arrived too. She took the boy’s hand.
« On peut prendre ça ? » a demandé le garçon en montrant un jouet du doigt.
“Can we get this?” the boy asked, pointing to a toy.
Sa mère l’a regardé rapidement. « C’est trop cher », a-t-elle dit.
His mum looked at it quickly. “It’s too expensive,” she said.
« Chérie, notre vol part bientôt », a dit ma mère. « Il faut qu’on y aille. »
“Darling, our flight is leaving soon,” said my mum. “We’ve got to go.”
« Viens », ai-je dit au garçon. « On peut s’asseoir l’un à côté de l’autre dans l’avion. »
“Come on,” I said to the boy. “We can sit next to each other on the plane.”
La mère du garçon m’a regardée. « Nous ne prenons pas le même vol que vous, ma chérie », a-t-elle dit gentiment. « Notre vol part dans trois heures. »
The boy’s mum looked at me. “We aren’t getting the same flight as you, dear,” she said kindly. “Our flight leaves in three hours.”
« Allez, on est en retard », a insisté ma mère.
“Come on, we’re late,” my mum insisted.
Elle me tirait par le bras. J’ai continué à regarder le garçon pendant que je m’éloignais. Il avait l’air triste, mais je ne le voyais pas bien. J’avais les larmes aux yeux.
She was pulling my arm. I continued looking at the boy as I walked away. He looked sad, but I couldn’t see him clearly. There were tears in my eyes.
J’ai continué à pleurer, en silence, dans la file d’attente à la porte trente-deux. Puis j’ai vu le garçon courir vers moi. J’ai vite essuyé mes larmes.
I continued crying, quietly, in the queue at Gate Thirty-Two. Then I saw the boy running towards me. I quickly wiped my tears.

He held out his hand. There was a plastic ring in it.
« C’était le jouet le moins cher du magasin », a-t-il dit. « Maman en a acheté une pour moi, et une pour toi. »
“It was the cheapest toy in the shop,” he said. “Mum bought one for me, and one for you.”
J’ai pris la bague et je l’ai mise. Le garçon m’a souri. Ses yeux avaient l’air humides aussi. Puis il est parti en courant.
I took the ring and put it on. The boy smiled at me. His eyes looked wet too. Then he ran away.
À cette époque-là, il n’y avait pas de téléphones portables. Il n’y avait ni e-mail, ni réseaux sociaux. Il n’y avait pas Internet. Je n’ai jamais revu le garçon, mais j’ai porté la bague jusqu’à ce qu’elle se casse.
In those days, there were no mobile phones. There was no email or social media. There was no internet. I never saw the boy again, but I wore the ring until it broke.
Encore aujourd’hui, je m’imagine visiter sa maison. La porte s’ouvre. « Je t’ai enfin trouvé, Agent spécial Quatorze », dis-je. Nous ne nous sommes jamais dit nos prénoms.
Even today, I still imagine visiting his house. The door opens. “I’ve found you at last, Special Agent Fourteen,” I say. We never told each other our names.
