« J’adorerais travailler là-bas », a murmuré Alain. « Mais je ne réussis jamais bien les entretiens. »
“I’d love to work there,” Alan whispered. “But I never do well at interviews.”
« Sois juste confiant ! » a dit la mère d’Alain.
“Just be confident!” said Alan’s mum.
Alain a sonné à la porte du grand immeuble de bureaux. Le panneau au-dessus de la sonnette indiquait “Super Logiciels SARL”.
Alan rang the bell outside the tall office building. The sign above the bell said ‘Super Software Ltd’.
À l’intérieur du bâtiment, Tatiana, la propriétaire de l’entreprise, a entendu la sonnette. Elle s’est frotté le front. Alain était le douzième et dernier candidat.
Inside the building, Tanya, the company owner, heard the bell. She rubbed her forehead. Alan was the twelfth, and final, candidate.
Tous les autres candidats avaient répondu parfaitement à ses questions. N’importe lequel d’entre eux ferait un bon développeur logiciel junior. Mais elle ne pouvait pas dire à Alain de partir. Elle devait aussi l’interviewer.
All the other candidates had answered her questions perfectly. Any of them would be a good Junior Software Developer. But she couldn’t tell Alan to go away. She had to interview him as well.
Tatiana a lu le CV d’Alain pendant qu’elle marchait vers la porte d’entrée. Il avait étudié dans la meilleure école du pays, et toutes ses notes étaient excellentes. « Les gens comme lui pensent qu’ils sont meilleurs que tout le monde », a-t-elle pensé. « Et ils sont toujours trop confiants. Les personnes trop confiantes font des erreurs. »
Tanya read Alan’s CV while she walked to the front door. He had studied at the best school in the country, and all his grades were excellent. ‘People like that think they’re better than everyone else,’ she thought. ‘And they’re always too confident. Over-confident people make mistakes.’
Puis elle a eu une idée. “Très bien, Alain”, a-t-elle pensé. “Si tu es si intelligent, je vais rendre les questions plus difficiles.”
Then she had an idea. ‘Alright, Alan,’ she thought. ‘If you’re so clever, I’ll make the questions more difficult.’
La porte s’est ouverte et Alain a serré la main de Tatiana. Il l’a suivie dans une salle de réunion et ils se sont assis.
The door opened and Alan shook hands with Tanya. He followed her into a meeting room and they sat down.
Après quelques banalités, Tatiana a dit : « Parlons de ton expérience. »
After some small-talk, Tanya said, “Let’s talk about your experience.”
Alain s’est senti nerveux : il n’avait pas beaucoup d’expérience. Mais ensuite, il s’est souvenu du conseil de sa mère : “Sois confiant !” Alors il s’est redressé et a dit : « J’ai beaucoup d’expérience pertinente. »
Alan felt nervous: he didn’t have a lot of experience. But then he remembered his mum’s advice: ‘Be confident!’ So he sat up straight, and said, “I have a lot of relevant experience.”
« Très bien. Parle-moi d’une fois où tu as accidentellement supprimé les fichiers de tout le monde. Pourquoi l’as-tu fait ? »
“Great. Tell me about a time when you accidentally deleted everyone else’s files. Why did you do it?”
« Je n’ai jamais fait ça. Je ne causerais jamais ce genre de problème. »
“I’ve never done that. I would never cause that kind of problem.”
« Tu as l’air très sûr de toi à ce sujet », a dit Tatiana.
“You sound very confident about that,” said Tanya.
« Je le suis. »
“I am.”
Tatiana a écrit une note : “Pense qu’il ne fait jamais d’erreurs.”
Tanya wrote a note: ‘Thinks he never makes mistakes.’
« Ensuite », a-t-elle dit, « pensons à une situation difficile. »
“Next,” she said, “let’s think about a difficult situation.”
« Aucun problème ! » a dit Alain avec un sourire.
“No problem!” said Alan with a smile.
« Imagine que notre logiciel a complètement cessé de fonctionner. Est-ce que tu paniquerais ? »
“Imagine that our software has completely stopped working. Would you panic?”
Sans hésiter, Alain a répondu : « Pas du tout. D’abord, je me connecterais et — »
Without hesitating, Alan responded: “Not at all. First, I would log in and —”
« Dans cette situation, tous nos ordinateurs ont aussi cessé de fonctionner. Est-ce que tu paniquerais maintenant ? »
“In this situation, all our computers have stopped working as well. Now would you panic?”
Alain n’a pas hésité. « Absolument pas. J’organiserais une réunion — »
Alan didn’t pause. “Absolutely not. I would arrange a meeting —”
« Le problème est survenu à minuit. »
“The problem occurred at midnight.”
« Je — je — je viendrais au bureau et — »
“I — I — I would come to the office and —”
« Tu ne peux pas aller au bureau. Nous avons perdu la clé. Le bureau est en feu. »
“You can’t get into the office. We’ve lost the key. The office is on fire.”
« Eh bien, dans ce cas-là, je resterais calme et — »
“Well, in that case, I’d stay calm, and —”
« Nous avons suffisamment discuté de cette situation », l’a interrompu Tatiana. Elle a écrit une autre note : “Ne prend pas les problèmes au sérieux.”
“We’ve discussed this situation enough,” Tanya interrupted. She made another note: ‘Doesn’t take problems seriously.’
Trente minutes plus tard, Alain et Tatiana se sentaient tous les deux épuisés.
Thirty minutes later, both Alan and Tanya felt exhausted.
« Je suis désolée, Alain », a dit Tatiana. « Tu n’es pas le genre de personne que je recherche. Merci pour ton temps. »
“I’m sorry, Alan,” said Tanya. “You’re not the kind of person I’m looking for. Thank you for your time.”
Alain a baissé les yeux. « Merci pour l’opportunité », a-t-il murmuré.
Alan looked down. “Thank you for the opportunity,” he whispered.
À l’extérieur du bâtiment, Alain a appelé sa mère.
Outside the building, Alan called his mum.
« Je n’ai pas eu le poste », a-t-il dit. « Je pense que j’ai été trop confiant. »
“I didn’t get the job,” he said. “I think I was too confident.”
« Je suis désolée de t’avoir donné un mauvais conseil », a dit sa mère.
“I’m sorry I gave you bad advice,” said his mum.
« Ce n’est pas grave », a dit Alain. « Tu essayais seulement d’aider. Mais j’aurais dû être honnête. Je ne suis pas très confiant. Je n’ai pas beaucoup d’expérience. Mais j’apprends vite, je travaille dur, et je voulais vraiment ce poste. Tant pis. Au moins, je n’ai pas à travailler avec Tatiana. »
“It’s ok,” said Alan. “You were only trying to help. But I should have been honest. I’m not very confident. I don’t have a lot of experience. But I do learn quickly, I do work hard, and I did want the job. Nevermind. At least I don’t have to work with Tanya.”
Alain a raccroché, s’est retourné, et a vu que Tatiana se tenait juste derrière lui. Elle quittait le bureau pour rentrer chez elle. Alain est parti rapidement.
Alan put the phone down, turned around, and saw that Tanya was standing just behind him. She was leaving the office to go home. Alan walked away quickly.
« Alain ! » a crié Tatiana. Elle a couru vers lui. « J’ai encore une question. »
“Alan!” Tanya shouted. She ran towards him. “I have one more question.”
« Euh… oui ? » a marmonné Alain.
“Uh… ok?” Alan mumbled.
« Parle-moi d’une fois où tu es allé à un entretien chez Super Logiciels SARL. »
“Tell me about a time when you went to an interview at Super Software Ltd.”
Alain a ri. « J’ai fait semblant d’être quelqu’un que je ne suis pas. Ça ne s’est pas bien passé. »
Alan laughed. “I pretended to be someone that I’m not. It didn’t go well.”
Tatiana a tendu la main. « Tu as admis que tu as fait une erreur. Alors je peux en faire autant. »
Tanya held out her hand. “You admitted that you made a mistake. So can I.”
