“Non dimenticate i vestiti pesanti”, dice Luisa ai suoi figli. “Sto preparando i miei adesso.”
“Don’t forget your warm clothes,” says Louisa to her children. “I’m packing mine now.”
Prende il suo zaino e sale al piano di sopra. Guarda il suo quaderno. In cima a una lunga lista c’è scritto ‘Gita in campeggio’. Mette nello zaino due paia di guanti, due sciarpe, due cappotti, cinque magliette e dieci paia di calzini.
She takes her backpack upstairs. She looks at her notebook. It says ‘Camping Trip’ at the top of a long list. She packs two pairs of gloves, two scarves, two coats, five shirts and ten pairs of socks.
“Sono solo tre giorni”, dice suo marito.
“It’s only three days,” says her husband.
“Per ogni evenienza”, spiega lei.
“Just in case,” she explains.
Vanno in cucina.
They go to the kitchen.
“Non dimenticare di portare abbastanza cibo”, dice a suo marito.
“Don’t forget to bring enough food,” she tells her husband.
Lui mette nello zaino barrette di cereali, panini al burro di arachidi, formaggio e frutta.
He packs cereal bars, peanut butter sandwiches, cheese and fruit.
Luisa apre la credenza. Tira fuori quattro scatolette di fagioli, cinque scatolette di tonno e otto scatolette di pomodori. Poi prende tre pacchi di pasta. Mette tutto nel suo zaino.
Louisa opens the cupboard. She takes out four cans of beans, five cans of tuna and eight cans of tomatoes. Then she gets three packets of pasta. She puts it all in her backpack.
Suo marito sembra sorpreso.
Her husband looks surprised.
“Abbiamo bisogno di pasti sani”, spiega Luisa.
“We need healthy meals,” Louisa explains.
“Ma… come fai a cucinarli?”
“But… you can’t cook them?”
Luisa prende una scatola e la apre. È un nuovo fornello da campeggio. Lo mette nel suo zaino. Ora il suo zaino è pieno.
Louisa picks up a box and opens it. It’s a new camping stove. She puts it in her backpack. Now her backpack is full.
“Non dimenticare di portare la bombola di gas”, dice a suo marito. Indica le altre scatole.
“Don’t forget to bring the gas,” she tells her husband. She points to the other boxes.
Luisa mette lo zaino sulle spalle.
Louisa puts her backpack on her back.
“Forse è… troppo pesante, cara?”
“Maybe that’s… too heavy, dear?”
Il viso di Luisa è rosso. “No, va bene”, dice. Tossisce.
Louisa’s face is red. “It’s fine,” she says. She coughs.
Mettono tutto in macchina. I loro figli salgono sul sedile posteriore. Luisa si siede al volante. Suo marito accende il GPS.
They put everything in the car. Their children get in the back. Louisa sits behind the wheel. Her husband turns on the GPS.
Guidano per otto ore. È stancante, ma la campagna è bella. Alle sei parcheggiano la macchina in mezzo a un grande campo. Il sole sta tramontando.
They drive for eight hours. It’s tiring, but the countryside is beautiful. At six o’ clock they park the car in the middle of a large field. The sun is setting.
“Ho freddo”, dice la figlia.
“I’m cold,” says their daughter.
Luisa prende il cappotto pesante dallo zaino di sua figlia.
Louisa gets the warm coat from her daughter’s backpack.
“Ho fame!” dice il figlio.
“I’m hungry!” says her son.
Montano il tavolo e le sedie da campeggio. Luisa mette il fornello sul tavolo.
They set up the camping table and chairs. Louisa puts the stove on the table.
“Ti sei ricordato del gas?” chiede a suo marito.
“Did you remember the gas?” she asks her husband.
“Certo”, dice lui. Le dà una scatola.
“Of course,” he says. He gives her a box.
Lei la apre. Tira fuori la bombola di gas. La collega. Il fornello si accende. Ci mette sopra una pentola.
She opens it. She takes out the gas canister. She connects it. The stove lights. She puts a pot on top.
Tira fuori quattro scatolette e le mette sul tavolo.
She takes out four cans and puts them on the table.
“Ma non puoi aprire queste scatolette con le mani!” dice il marito di Luisa. “Ti sei ricordata —”
“But you can’t open these cans with your hand!” says Louisa’s husband. “Did you remember —”
“Certo”, dice Luisa.
“Of course,” says Louisa.
Tira fuori un apriscatole dal suo zaino. Apre le scatole. Venti minuti dopo, tutti si gustano un pasto caldo. Poi, tutti ringraziano Luisa per aver cucinato.
She takes a can opener out of her backpack. She opens the cans. Twenty minutes later, they all enjoy the hot meal. Afterwards, they all thank Louisa for cooking.
Lei dice, “Ora è quasi buio. Montiamo la tenda.”
She says, “It’s almost dark now. Let’s set up the tent.”
Suo marito sta guardando nella macchina. “Dov’è la tenda?” dice.
Her husband is looking in the car. “Where’s the tent?” he says.
