Cristoforo ha preso in mano il regalo. Sua figlia lo ha guardato. Lui ha aperto il pacchetto. Dentro, c’era una tazza. L’ha tirata fuori. Sulla tazza c’era l’immagine di uno strano animale.
Christopher picked up the gift. His daughter watched him. He opened the box. Inside, there was a mug. He took it out. There was a picture of a strange animal on the mug.
“Buon compleanno!” ha detto sua figlia.
“Happy birthday!” said his daughter.
“Che cos’è?” ha chiesto Cristoforo.
“What is it?” Christopher asked.
Sua figlia ha smesso di sorridere.
His daughter stopped smiling.
“È un axolotl”, ha sussurrato la moglie di Cristoforo. “Lo ha scelto lei.”
“It’s an axolotl,” Christopher’s wife whispered. “She chose it.”
“Non ti piace!” ha detto la figlia. È corsa nell’altra stanza.
“You don’t like it!” said their daughter. She ran into the other room.
Cristoforo l’ha seguita. Lei lo ha guardato. Aveva cinque anni, i suoi occhi erano molto grandi e il suo viso era pieno di emozione.
Christopher followed her. She looked at him. She was five years old, her eyes were very big, and her face was full of emotion.
“Mi piace”, ha detto lui. “Grazie.”
“I love it,” he said. “Thank you.”

“You don’t!”
“Sì, è vero. Ero sorpreso. Come facevi a saperlo? Gli axolotl sono il mio animale preferito.”
“I do. I was surprised. How did you know? Axolotls are my favourite animal.”
“Davvero?”
“They are?”
La moglie di Cristoforo è entrata nella stanza. “Non lo sapevo”, ha detto.
Christopher’s wife came in. “I didn’t know that,” she said.
“Beh, è vero. Amo gli axolotl. Sono così… insoliti! Ti piacciono?”
“Well, it’s true. I love axolotls. They’re so… unusual! Do you like them?”
Sua figlia ha annuito. “Mi piacciono le loro facce buffe.”
His daughter nodded. “I like their funny faces.”
“A me piace la tua faccia buffa.” La figlia ha riso.
“I like your funny face.” She giggled.
L’anno successivo, Cristoforo ha aperto il suo regalo. Era un piatto con l’immagine di un axolotl.
The next year, Christopher opened his gift. It was a plate with a picture of an axolotl.
“Un altro axolotl!” ha detto. “È… è…”
“Another axolotl!” he said. “It’s — it’s —”
Sua figlia lo ha guardato. “È il tuo animale preferito.”
His daughter looked at him. “It’s your favourite animal.”
“Lo è”, ha detto lui. “Grazie, tesoro.”
“It is,” he said. “Thank you, sweetheart.”
Da quel momento in poi, ogni anno, tutti i regali di Cristoforo sono stati legati agli axolotl. Ha ricevuto decorazioni, libri, magliette, cappelli, calzini, mutande e altro. Ovunque guardava, vedeva un axolotl.
From then on, every year, all of Christopher’s gifts were related to axolotls. He received ornaments, books, T-shirts, hats, socks, underpants, and more. Everywhere he looked, he saw an axolotl.
Per il suo sessantesimo compleanno, la figlia di Cristoforo gli ha dato una busta. Lui l’ha aperta.
On his sixtieth birthday, Christopher’s daughter gave him an envelope. He opened it.
“Biglietti per me e te… per visitare l’acquario?”
“Tickets for me and you… to visit the aquarium?”
“Non hai mai visto un vero axolotl!” ha detto sua figlia.
“You’ve never seen a real axolotl!” said his daughter.
“Che pensiero gentile!” ha detto la moglie di Cristoforo.
“How thoughtful!” said Christopher’s wife.
Cristoforo e sua figlia hanno passato una giornata meravigliosa all’acquario. A lei è piaciuto tantissimo vedere tutti i diversi tipi di axolotl. Alcuni erano rosa, altri erano dorati, altri erano marroni e verdi.
Christopher and his daughter had a wonderful day at the aquarium. She loved seeing all the different kinds of axolotls. Some were pink, others were golden, others were brown and green.
“Se perdono un arto”, ha spiegato sua figlia, “poi ricresce. Ovviamente, lo sai già.”
“If they lose a limb,” his daughter explained, “it grows back. Of course, you know that already.”
“Ovviamente”, ha detto Cristoforo.
“Obviously,” said Christopher.
“Ti piacciono… davvero… gli axolotl, papà?”
“You do… really… like axolotls, dad?”
“Certo.”
“Of course.”
“Qual è la cosa che ti piace di più di loro?”
“What’s your favourite thing about them?”
Cristoforo ci ha pensato. “Hanno abilità incredibili”, ha detto. “Grazie a loro, un uomo di sessant’anni ha passato un’intera giornata con la sua figlia di trent’anni, che è sempre impegnata. Amo gli axolotl.”
Christopher thought about it. “They’ve got amazing abilities,” he said. “Because of them, a sixty-year-old man spent a whole day with his busy, thirty-year-old daughter. I love axolotls.”
