La nueva casa de Andrés estaba situada en una calle tranquila en una zona cara del país. Había ahorrado durante años para poder mudarse allí. La casa no era grande y necesitaba una redecoración, pero estaba encantado de dejar atrás su antiguo barrio.
Andrew’s new house was located on a quiet street in an expensive part of the country. He’d saved for years so he could move there. The house wasn’t big, and it needed redecoration, but he was delighted to leave his old neighbourhood behind.
Durante la primera semana Andrés pidió presupuesto a varios decoradores, pero sus precios eran demasiado elevados. No estaba seguro de qué hacer a continuación.
In the first week, Andrew asked several decorators to give him a quote, but their prices were far too high. He wasn’t sure what to do next.
“Andrés, ¡esto ya no es tu antiguo pueblo de antes!” pensó. “La gente de aquí es amable. ¡Puedes pedirle consejo a tu vecino!”
‘Andrew, this isn’t your old town anymore!’ he thought. ‘People are nice, here. You can ask your neighbour for advice!’
Así que llamó a la puerta de su vecino.
So he knocked on his neighbour’s door.
“¡Bienvenido al barrio!” dijo el hombre. “Soy Berto. ¡Pasa!”
“Welcome to the neighbourhood!” said the man. “I’m Bob. Come in!”
Berto parecía tener unos sesenta años. Tenía un rostro amable y sabio, y una voz suave. A Andrés le agradó de inmediato. Berto le ofreció a Andrés una taza de té y unas galletas y se sentaron en el salón de Beto.
Bob looked about sixty. He had a kind, wise face, and a gentle voice. Andrew liked him immediately. Bob brought Andrew a cup of tea and some biscuits, and they sat down in Bob’s lounge.
“Es muy amable por tu parte,” dijo Andrés. “¡Mi vecino anterior ni siquiera me dijo hola!”
“This is very kind of you,” said Andrew. “My previous neighbour never even said hello to me!”
Hablaron un poco antes de que Andrés mencionara su dificultad con los decoradores.
They talked for a little while, before Andrew mentioned his difficulty with the decorators.
“Por eso decidí decorar yo mismo,” dijo Berto.
“That’s why I decided to decorate, myself,” said Bob.
“¿Tú decoraste tú mismo?” exclamó Andrés, asombrado, mirando a su alrededor.
“You decorated yourself?” Andrew said with amazement, looking around.
Todo en la casa parecía muy moderno y nuevo. Las paredes eran lisas y estaban impecables.
Everything in the house looked very fashionable and new. The walls were smooth and flawless.
“Me encanta ese color verde que has elegido,” dijo Andrés. “Es de muy buen gusto. ¿Te importaría si elijo algo similar para mi casa?”
“I love this green colour you’ve chosen,” said Andrew. “It’s very tasteful. Would you mind if I chose something similar in my house?”
“¡Por supuesto que no!” dijo Berto. “Me alabas. De hecho, me queda un poco de esa pintura en el garaje. ¿La querrías?”
“Of course not!” said Bob. “I’m flattered. In fact, I’ve got a bit of that paint left in the garage. Would you like it?”
“¿Estás seguro?”
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutamente.” Berto pensó por un momento. “¿Qué te parece esto? ¡Iré a redecorar tu casa! No es gratis. Cobraré una pequeña cantidad, ya que me vendría bien un dinero extra. Pero ¡sabes cómo quedará! Y me gusta el trabajo.”
“Absolutely.” Bob thought for a moment. “How about this? I’ll come and redecorate your house for you! I don’t mean for free. I’ll charge a small amount – I could use some extra money. But you know what it will look like! And I enjoy the work.”
Andrés estaba encantado; la gente realmente era mucho más amable aquí. Aceptó la oferta de Berto de inmediato.
Andrew was delighted – people really were much kinder here. He accepted Bob’s offer straightaway.
Al día siguiente, Berto llamó a la puerta de Andrés. Llevaba dos latas de pintura verde.
The next day, Bob knocked on Andrew’s door. He was carrying two cans of green paint.
“Necesitaremos cuatro latas más,” explicó Berto. “Toma estas, y yo iré a comprar las demás.”
“We’ll need four more cans,” Bob explained. “Take these, and I’ll go to buy them.”
“Te daré el dinero en efectivo,” dijo Andrés. “¿Cuánto?” Berto le dijo el precio. “Ya veo. Es una pintura muy cara.”
“I’ll give you the cash,” said Andrew. “How much?” Bob told him the price. “I see. That’s expensive paint.”
“Lo es,” coincidió Berto. “Por eso se ve tan bien.”
“It is,” Bob agreed. “That’s why it looks so nice.”
Andrés asintió y le dio el dinero a Berto. Berto se marchó en coche.
Andrew nodded and gave Bob the cash. Bob drove away.
Andrés cantó una canción mientras extendía láminas de plástico por el suelo de todas las estancias. A la hora del almuerzo se preparó un bocadillo y se sentó en el suelo para comerlo.
Andrew sang a song while he laid plastic sheets on the floor in all the rooms. At lunchtime he made a sandwich, and he sat on the floor to eat it.
Berto no regresó por la tarde, pero a Andrés no le apetecía apresurarlo. Berto le estaba haciendo un gran favor. Pero cuando el cielo se oscureció y Beto seguía sin aparecer, Andrés se preocupó. “Parecía bastante mayor,” pensó Andrés. “¿Y si se ha caído?”
Bob didn’t return in the afternoon, but Andrew didn’t want to hurry him. Bob was doing him a big favour. But when the sky grew dark, and Bob still hadn’t come, Andrew became concerned. ‘He seemed quite old,’ Andrew thought. ‘What if he’s fallen over?’
Corrió a la casa de su vecino y llamó a la puerta. Se encendió la luz y la puerta se abrió.
He rushed over to his neighbour’s house and knocked on the door. The light turned on and the door opened.
Una mujer abrió la puerta. “¿Sí?” dijo.
A woman opened the door. “Yes?” she said.
“Oh, hola,” dijo Andrés. “Estoy buscando a Berto.”
“Oh, hello,” said Andrew. “I’m looking for Bob.”
“¡Yo también!” dijo la mujer. “Le pagué para redecorar mi casa mientras estaba de vacaciones. Se ha bebido todo mi té y se ha comido todas mis galletas, ¡pero mis paredes siguen siendo de ese verde asqueroso!”
“Me too!” said the woman. “I paid him to redecorate my house while I was on holiday. He’s drunk all my tea and eaten all my biscuits – but my walls are still that disgusting green!”
