Christophe a pris le cadeau. Sa fille l’a regardé. Il a ouvert la boîte. À l’intérieur, il y avait une tasse. Il l’a sortie. Il y avait une image d’un animal étrange sur la tasse.
Christopher picked up the gift. His daughter watched him. He opened the box. Inside, there was a mug. He took it out. There was a picture of a strange animal on the mug.
« Joyeux anniversaire ! » a dit sa fille.
“Happy birthday!” said his daughter.
« Qu’est-ce que c’est ? » a demandé Christophe.
“What is it?” Christopher asked.
Sa fille a arrêté de sourire.
His daughter stopped smiling.
« C’est un axolotl », a chuchoté la femme de Christophe. « C’est elle qui l’a choisi. »
“It’s an axolotl,” Christopher’s wife whispered. “She chose it.”
« Tu n’aimes pas ! » a dit leur fille. Elle est partie en courant dans l’autre pièce.
“You don’t like it!” said their daughter. She ran into the other room.
Christophe l’a suivie. Elle l’a regardé. Elle avait cinq ans, ses yeux étaient très grands, et son visage était plein d’émotion.
Christopher followed her. She looked at him. She was five years old, her eyes were very big, and her face was full of emotion.
« Je l’adore », a-t-il dit. « Merci. »
“I love it,” he said. “Thank you.”
« Tu ne l’aimes pas ! »
“You don’t!”
« Si, je l’aime. J’ai été surpris. Comment as-tu su ? Les axolotls sont mes animaux préférés. »
“I do. I was surprised. How did you know? Axolotls are my favourite animal.”
« Vraiment ? »
“They are?”
La femme de Christophe est entrée. « Je ne le savais pas », a-t-elle dit.
Christopher’s wife came in. “I didn’t know that,” she said.
« Eh bien, c’est vrai. J’adore les axolotls. Ils sont si… inhabituels ! Tu les aimes ? »
“Well, it’s true. I love axolotls. They’re so… unusual! Do you like them?”
Sa fille a hoché la tête. « J’aime leur visage rigolo. »
His daughter nodded. “I like their funny faces.”
« J’aime ton visage rigolo. » Elle a ri.
“I like your funny face.” She giggled.
L’année suivante, Christophe a ouvert son cadeau. C’était une assiette avec une image d’un axolotl.
The next year, Christopher opened his gift. It was a plate with a picture of an axolotl.
« Encore un axolotl ! » a-t-il dit. « C’est — c’est — »
“Another axolotl!” he said. “It’s — it’s —”
Sa fille l’a regardé. « C’est ton animal préféré. »
His daughter looked at him. “It’s your favourite animal.”
« Oui », a-t-il dit. « Merci, ma chérie. »
“It is,” he said. “Thank you, sweetheart.”
À partir de ce moment-là, chaque année, tous les cadeaux de Christophe ont été liés aux axolotls. Il a reçu des décorations, des livres, des T-shirts, des chapeaux, des chaussettes, des sous-vêtements, et plus encore. Partout où il regardait, il voyait un axolotl.
From then on, every year, all of Christopher’s gifts were related to axolotls. He received ornaments, books, T-shirts, hats, socks, underpants, and more. Everywhere he looked, he saw an axolotl.
Pour son soixantième anniversaire, la fille de Christophe lui a donné une enveloppe. Il l’a ouverte.
On his sixtieth birthday, Christopher’s daughter gave him an envelope. He opened it.

“Tickets for me and you… to visit the aquarium?”
« Tu n’as jamais vu un vrai axolotl ! » a dit sa fille.
“You’ve never seen a real axolotl!” said his daughter.
« Comme c’est attentionné ! » a dit la femme de Christophe.
“How thoughtful!” said Christopher’s wife.
Christophe et sa fille ont passé une journée merveilleuse à l’aquarium. Elle a adoré voir tous les différents types d’axolotls. Certains étaient roses, d’autres étaient dorés, d’autres étaient bruns et verts.
Christopher and his daughter had a wonderful day at the aquarium. She loved seeing all the different kinds of axolotls. Some were pink, others were golden, others were brown and green.
« S’ils perdent un membre », a expliqué sa fille, « il repousse. Bien sûr, tu le sais déjà. »
“If they lose a limb,” his daughter explained, “it grows back. Of course, you know that already.”
« Évidemment », a dit Christophe.
“Obviously,” said Christopher.
« Tu aimes… vraiment… les axolotls, papa ? »
“You do… really… like axolotls, dad?”
« Bien sûr. »
“Of course.”
« Qu’est-ce que tu préfères chez eux ? »
“What’s your favourite thing about them?”
Christophe a réfléchi. « Ils ont des capacités incroyables », a-t-il dit. « Grâce à eux, un homme de soixante ans a passé toute une journée avec sa fille très occupée de trente ans. J’adore les axolotls. »
Christopher thought about it. “They’ve got amazing abilities,” he said. “Because of them, a sixty-year-old man spent a whole day with his busy, thirty-year-old daughter. I love axolotls.”
