“Mi piacerebbe lavorare lì”, ha sussurrato Alano. “Ma non vado mai bene ai colloqui.”
“I’d love to work there,” Alan whispered. “But I never do well at interviews.”
“Abbi fiducia in te stesso!” ha detto la mamma di Alano.
“Just be confident!” said Alan’s mum.
Alano ha suonato il campanello fuori dall’alto palazzo degli uffici. Il cartello sopra il campanello diceva “Super Software S.r.l.”.
Alan rang the bell outside the tall office building. The sign above the bell said ‘Super Software Ltd’.
All’interno del palazzo, Tania, la proprietaria dell’azienda, ha sentito il campanello. Si è massaggiata la fronte. Alano era il dodicesimo e ultimo candidato.
Inside the building, Tanya, the company owner, heard the bell. She rubbed her forehead. Alan was the twelfth, and final, candidate.
Tutti gli altri candidati avevano risposto perfettamente alle sue domande. Ognuno di loro sarebbe stato un buon Junior Software Developer. Ma non poteva mandare via Alano. Doveva fare il colloquio anche con lui.
All the other candidates had answered her questions perfectly. Any of them would be a good Junior Software Developer. But she couldn’t tell Alan to go away. She had to interview him as well.
Tania ha letto il CV di Alano mentre camminava verso la porta d’ingresso. Alano aveva studiato nella migliore scuola del Paese, e tutti i suoi voti erano eccellenti. “Persone così pensano di essere migliori di tutti gli altri”, ha pensato. “E sono sempre troppo sicure di sé. Le persone troppo sicure di sé fanno errori.”
Tanya read Alan’s CV while she walked to the front door. He had studied at the best school in the country, and all his grades were excellent. ‘People like that think they’re better than everyone else,’ she thought. ‘And they’re always too confident. Over-confident people make mistakes.’
Poi ha avuto un’idea. “Va bene, Alano”, ha pensato. “Se sei così intelligente, renderò le domande più difficili.”
Then she had an idea. ‘Alright, Alan,’ she thought. ‘If you’re so clever, I’ll make the questions more difficult.’
La porta si è aperta e Alano ha stretto la mano a Tania. L’ha seguita in una sala riunioni e si sono seduti.
The door opened and Alan shook hands with Tanya. He followed her into a meeting room and they sat down.
Dopo un po’ di conversazione informale, Tania ha detto: “Parliamo della tua esperienza.”
After some small-talk, Tanya said, “Let’s talk about your experience.”
Alano si è sentito nervoso: non aveva molta esperienza. Ma poi si è ricordato del consiglio di sua madre: “Abbi fiducia in te stesso!” Così si è raddrizzato sulla sedia e ha detto: “Ho molta esperienza nel settore.”
Alan felt nervous: he didn’t have a lot of experience. But then he remembered his mum’s advice: ‘Be confident!’ So he sat up straight, and said, “I have a lot of relevant experience.”
“Ottimo. Parlami di una volta in cui hai cancellato per sbaglio i file di tutti gli altri. Perché l’hai fatto?”
“Great. Tell me about a time when you accidentally deleted everyone else’s files. Why did you do it?”
“Non l’ho mai fatto. Non causerei mai quel tipo di problema.”
“I’ve never done that. I would never cause that kind of problem.”
“Sembri molto sicuro di questo”, ha detto Tania.
“You sound very confident about that,” said Tanya.
“Lo sono.”
“I am.”
Tania ha scritto un appunto: “Pensa di non fare mai errori.”
Tanya wrote a note: ‘Thinks he never makes mistakes.’
“Avanti”, ha detto, “ora pensiamo a una situazione difficile.”
“Next,” she said, “let’s think about a difficult situation.”
“Nessun problema!” ha detto Alano con un sorriso.
“No problem!” said Alan with a smile.
“Immagina che il nostro software abbia smesso completamente di funzionare. Andresti in panico?”
“Imagine that our software has completely stopped working. Would you panic?”
Senza esitazione, Alano ha risposto: “Per niente. Per prima cosa, accederei al sistema e —”
Without hesitating, Alan responded: “Not at all. First, I would log in and —”
“In questa situazione, anche tutti i nostri computer hanno smesso di funzionare. Ora andresti in panico?”
“In this situation, all our computers have stopped working as well. Now would you panic?”
Alano non si è fermato. “Assolutamente no. Organizzerei una riunione —”
Alan didn’t pause. “Absolutely not. I would arrange a meeting —”
“Il problema è avvenuto a mezzanotte.”
“The problem occurred at midnight.”
“Io — io — io verrei in ufficio, e —”
“I — I — I would come to the office and —”
“Non puoi entrare in ufficio. Abbiamo perso la chiave. L’ufficio è in fiamme.”
“You can’t get into the office. We’ve lost the key. The office is on fire.”
“Beh, in quel caso, rimarrei calmo e —”
“Well, in that case, I’d stay calm, and —”
“Abbiamo discusso abbastanza di questa situazione”, ha interrotto Tania. Ha scritto un altro appunto: “Non prende sul serio i problemi.”
“We’ve discussed this situation enough,” Tanya interrupted. She made another note: ‘Doesn’t take problems seriously.’
Trenta minuti dopo, sia Alano che Tania erano esausti.
Thirty minutes later, both Alan and Tanya felt exhausted.
“Mi dispiace, Alano”, ha detto Tania. “Non sei il tipo di persona che sto cercando. Grazie per il tuo tempo.”
“I’m sorry, Alan,” said Tanya. “You’re not the kind of person I’m looking for. Thank you for your time.”
Alano ha abbassato lo sguardo. “Grazie per l’opportunità”, ha sussurrato.
Alan looked down. “Thank you for the opportunity,” he whispered.
Fuori dall’edificio, Alano ha telefonato a sua madre.
Outside the building, Alan called his mum.
“Non mi hanno dato il lavoro”, ha detto. “Penso di essere stato troppo sicuro di me.”
“I didn’t get the job,” he said. “I think I was too confident.”
“Mi dispiace di averti dato un brutto consiglio”, ha detto sua madre.
“I’m sorry I gave you bad advice,” said his mum.
“Non fa niente”, ha detto Alano. “Stavi solo cercando di aiutarmi. Ma avrei dovuto essere onesto. Non sono molto sicuro di me. Non ho molta esperienza. Ma imparo in fretta, lavoro sodo, e volevo davvero quel lavoro. Pazienza. Almeno non devo lavorare con Tania.”
“It’s ok,” said Alan. “You were only trying to help. But I should have been honest. I’m not very confident. I don’t have a lot of experience. But I do learn quickly, I do work hard, and I did want the job. Nevermind. At least I don’t have to work with Tanya.”
Alano ha messo giù il telefono, si è girato e ha visto che Tania era proprio dietro di lui. Stava uscendo dall’ufficio per tornare a casa. Alano si è allontanato rapidamente.
Alan put the phone down, turned around, and saw that Tanya was standing just behind him. She was leaving the office to go home. Alan walked away quickly.
“Alano!” ha urlato Tania. È corsa verso di lui. “Ho ancora una domanda.”
“Alan!” Tanya shouted. She ran towards him. “I have one more question.”
“Eh… ok?” ha borbottato Alano.
“Uh… ok?” Alan mumbled.
“Raccontami di una volta in cui sei andato a un colloquio alla Super Software S.r.l.”
“Tell me about a time when you went to an interview at Super Software Ltd.”
Alano ha riso. “Ho fatto finta di essere qualcuno che non sono. Non è andata bene.”
Alan laughed. “I pretended to be someone that I’m not. It didn’t go well.”
Tania ha teso la mano. “Hai ammesso di aver fatto un errore. Posso farlo anch’io.”
Tanya held out her hand. “You admitted that you made a mistake. So can I.”
