Chiara era un’astronoma molto dedita al suo lavoro, ma non era mai la prima a scoprire qualcosa. Poi, una notte, ha avvistato un enorme meteorite che sembrava avvicinarsi alla Terra.
Clare was a dedicated astronomer, but she was never the first to discover something. Then, one night, she spotted a huge meteor that seemed to be getting closer to the Earth.
“Sta venendo dritto verso di noi!” ha esclamato.
“It’s coming right at us!” she exclaimed.
Ha mandato un’email ai suoi colleghi, ma nessuno ha risposto. Così ha iniziato a telefonare, ma le chiamate finivano tutte nella segreteria e nessuno richiamava. Alla fine, dopo cinquanta telefonate, uno dei suoi colleghi ha risposto al telefono.
She emailed her colleagues about it, but none of them responded. So she started phoning them, but the calls all went to voicemail, and no one called back. Eventually, after calling fifty times, one of her colleagues picked up the phone.
“Dici sempre cose del genere”, ha detto l’altro astronomo. “E hai sempre torto. Non ti crediamo.”
“You’re always saying things like this,” said the other astronomer. “And you’re always wrong. We don’t believe you.”
Ma Chiara sapeva di avere ragione. E se nessuno le avesse creduto, la Terra sarebbe stata distrutta.
But Clare knew she was right. And if no one believed her, the Earth would be destroyed.
Chiara ha deciso di costruire un razzo. “Salverò tutti!” ha dichiarato. “Anche se non mi credono!”
Clare decided to build a rocket. “I’ll save everyone!” she declared. “Even if they don’t believe me!”
Di giorno lavorava al suo razzo. Di notte pianificava la missione. Sarebbe volata fino al meteorite per distruggerlo.
During the day she worked on her rocket. At night, she planned her mission. She would fly to the meteor and destroy it.
Finalmente è arrivato il giorno del lancio. Tremando, Chiara è salita sul suo razzo ed è partita verso lo spazio.
Finally, it was the day of the launch. Trembling, Clare climbed into her rocket and soared into space.
Ha volato in direzione del meteorite. Era esattamente dove aveva previsto.
She flew towards the meteor. It was exactly where she had predicted.
“Un momento”, ha detto, guardando attentamente dall’oblò.
“Wait a minute,” she said, looking closely through her window.
Si è sentita molto sciocca. Non era un meteorite. Era il Guardiano spaziale, un famoso satellite che aveva smesso di funzionare anni prima.
She felt very foolish. It wasn’t a meteor. It was the Space Guard, a famous satellite that had stopped working years ago.
“Beh, ora che sono qui, almeno posso fare qualcosa di utile”, ha detto.
“Well, now that I’m here, at least I can do something useful,” she said.
Chiara ha indossato la tuta ed è uscita nello spazio con i suoi attrezzi. È volata fino al satellite e ha iniziato a lavorare. Alla fine, è riuscita a ripararlo.
Clare put on her suit and went into space with her tools. She flew over to the satellite, and began to work. Eventually, she managed to fix the satellite.
Sentendosi in imbarazzo, ha iniziato il rientro verso la Terra. Aveva assillato tutti i suoi colleghi ed era volata nello spazio, ma si era sbagliata. Non vedeva l’ora di ammetterlo.
Feeling embarrassed, she started flying back to Earth. She had pestered all her colleagues, and flown to space, but she was wrong. She didn’t look forward to admitting it.
Quando è atterrata, tutti i suoi colleghi erano lì.
When she landed, all her colleagues were there.
“Sono tornata”, ha detto con un sospiro. “Devo scusarmi. Pensavo che ci fosse un meteorite, ma —”
“I’m back,” she said with a sigh. “I have to apologise. I thought there was a meteor, but —”
“Ci dispiace di non averti ascoltata”, ha detto l’astronomo con cui aveva parlato al telefono. “Siamo fortunati che tu non abbia rinunciato e che tu abbia riparato il Guardiano spaziale. Il satellite ha immediatamente individuato il meteorite di cui ci avevi parlato. Era a solo un’ora di distanza!”
“We’re sorry for not listening to you,” said the astronomer she’d spoken to on the phone. “We’re lucky that you didn’t give up, and you fixed the Space Guard. The satellite immediately identified the meteor you told us about. It was only one hour away!”
“Riparare il satellite è stata un’ottima idea”, ha detto un altro astronomo. “I suoi sistemi automatici hanno distrutto rapidamente il meteorite. Hai salvato tutti!”
“Fixing the satellite was an excellent plan,” said another astronomer. “Its automatic systems destroyed the meteor quickly. You saved everyone!”
Chiara ha incrociato le braccia. “La prossima volta, rispondete al telefono!” ha sbottato.
Clare had crossed her arms. “Next time, pick up the phone!” she snapped.
