La Ratoncita estaba en su dormitorio, en su casa del bosque. Su casa estaba dentro de un pequeño tronco en el suelo. Tenía cuatro ventanas, una puerta principal y una puerta trasera, y una chimenea pequeña.
Miss Mouse was in her bedroom, in her house in the forest. Her house was inside a small log on the ground. It had four windows, a front door and a back door, and a little chimney.
La Ratoncita se estaba mirando en el espejo. “Mis orejas son tan grandes…” dijo con tristeza. “Los otros animales se ríen de mí.” Suspiró.
Mouse was looking in her mirror. “My ears are so big,” she said sadly. “The other animals laugh at me.” She sighed.
Fuera del tronco, el Señor Zorro pasaba por allí. Oyó lo que dijo la Ratoncita. Se acercó en silencio.
Outside the log, Mr Fox was passing by. He heard what Mouse said. He walked closer, quietly.
“Ojalá fuera como la Mariposa”, continuó la Ratoncita. “Todo el mundo quiere a la Mariposa. Es tan bonita… Sus alas son tan atractivas y coloridas… ¡Y qué orejas tan pequeñas! Su vida es fácil.”
“I wish I was like Butterfly,” Mouse continued. “Everyone loves Butterfly. She’s so pretty. Her wings are so attractive and colourful. And such small ears! Life is easy for her.”
“Disculpa”, dijo el Zorro.
“Excuse me,” said Fox.
La Ratoncita dio un salto. Se giró. Podía ver uno de los ojos del Zorro en cada ventana.
Mouse jumped. She turned around. She could see one of Fox’s eyes in each window.
La voz del Zorro era tranquila y amistosa. “Lo siento mucho por ti. Yo también soy muy feo.” El Zorro suspiró muy fuerte. “La vida es cruel. Los ratones pueden usar el lago mágico para volverse bellos, pero los zorros, no.”
Fox’s voice was calm and friendly. “I feel sorry for you. I am very ugly too.” The Fox sighed very loudly. “Life is cruel. Mice can use the magic lake to become beautiful, but foxes can’t.”
“¿Lago mágico?” preguntó la Ratoncita. “¿De qué estás hablando?”
“Magic lake?” asked Mouse. “What are you talking about?”
“Hay un lago mágico en el bosque. Cuando los ratones nadan en el lago, se convierten en mariposas. ¿No lo sabías?”
“There is a magic lake in the forest. When mice swim in the lake, they turn into butterflies. Didn’t you know?”
“¡No!” dijo la Ratoncita, con los ojos abiertos como platos.
“No!” said Mouse, with wide eyes.
“Bueno, sal de tu tronco y te llevaré allí”, dijo el Zorro.
“Well, come out of your log, and I’ll take you there,” said Fox.
La Ratoncitalo pensó detenidamente. Volvió a mirarse en el espejo. Vio sus grandes orejas.
Mouse thought carefully. She looked in the mirror again. She saw her big ears.
“Pero tengo que quedarme en casa”, dijo la Ratoncita. “Casi se me olvida. Mis sobrinas y sobrinos vienen a visitarme después del colegio. Tengo que esperarlos.”
“But I have to stay at home,” Mouse said. “I almost forgot. My nieces and nephews are visiting me after school. I have to wait for them.”
Ahora los ojos del Zorro estaban abiertos de par en par. “Eso no es un problema en absoluto”, dijo. “Yo te llevo. Primero iremos al Colegio de los Ratones. Luego iremos todos juntos al lago mágico.”
Now Fox’s eyes were wide. “That isn’t a problem at all,” he said. “I’ll carry you. We’ll go to the Mouse School first. Then we’ll all go to the magic lake together.”
El corazoncito de la Ratoncitalatía rápido mientras se ponía los zapatos. Abrió la puerta. El Zorro la esperaba pacientemente. Despacio, la Ratoncita caminó hacia él.
Mouse’s little heart beat quickly while she put on her shoes. She opened the door. Fox was waiting patiently. Slowly, Mouse walked towards him.
Cuando la Ratoncita estaba delante de la boca del Zorro, él dijo: “¿Cuántas sobrinas y sobrinos? ¿Qué edad tienen?”
When Mouse was in front of Fox’s mouth, he said, “How many nieces and nephews? How young?”
“Tengo doce sobrinas y ocho sobrinos”, dijo la Ratoncita. “Todos están haciendo sus exámenes finales. Son muy monos.”
“I have twelve nieces and eight nephews,” said Mouse. “They’re all taking their final exams. They’re very cute.”
“No puedo esperar a conocerlos.”
“I can’t wait to meet them.”
La Ratoncita se subió a la cabeza del Zorro.
Mouse climbed onto Fox’s head.
“Ve entre esos arbustos, sigue el río, y entonces el colegio estará en el campo”, dijo la Ratoncita.
“Go between those bushes, follow the river, then the school is in the field,” said Mouse.
El Zorro empezó a correr. La Ratoncita podía ver la lengua del Zorro, se estaba relamiendo.
Fox began to run. Mouse could see Fox’s tongue, licking his lips.
“Solo necesito un poco de agua”, dijo el Zorro. “Correr es muy cansado.”
“I just need some water,” said Fox. “Running is hard work.”
“Lo siento”, dijo la Ratoncita. “Está justo allí.”
“I’m sorry,” said Mouse. “It’s just over there.”
Podían ver el campo entre dos árboles grandes. El Zorro corrió deprisa.
They could see the field between two large trees. Fox ran quickly.
Se oyó un ruido fuerte. El Zorro gritó. Su pata estaba atrapada en una trampa.
There was a loud bang. Fox screamed. His foot was stuck in a trap.
La Ratoncita saltó de la cabeza del Zorro y empezó a caminar a casa.
Mouse jumped off Fox’s head, and began to walk home.
“¿Crees que soy estúpida?” dijo.
“Do you think I’m stupid?” she said.
